{"id":54644,"date":"2023-04-10T18:00:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T09:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=54644"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:21:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:21:54","slug":"chinese-police-carry-out-surprise-inspections-phones-owned-defectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/chinese-police-carry-out-surprise-inspections-phones-owned-defectors\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese police carry out surprise inspections of phones owned by defectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An atmosphere of fear is taking hold in some regions of China as the country&#8217;s police carry out random inspections of the mobile phone records and text messages of North Korean defectors, Daily NK has learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the past week, the police in some cities of Shandong and Liaoning provinces have been barging into the homes of female North Korean defectors living with Chinese men and suddenly inspecting their mobile phone records and WeChat records,&#8221; a reporting partner in China told Daily NK on Mar. 29, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, North Korean women living with Chinese men would be called to a defined place such as a police station or visited at home at an agreed upon time to have their phones inspected. This time, however, the police carried out surprise, selective raids, the reporting partner said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The raids appear connected to measures established March by public security agencies in certain regions of China that aim to prevent North Korean defectors illegally residing in the country from attempting to flee to South Korea en masse as a result of Beijing\u2019s relaxation of its COVID-19 restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the reporting partner, the police in Shandong Province carried out a surprise inspection of the mobile phones of female North Korean defectors living with Chinese men. Threatening the defectors, they told them, \u201cIf you were going to South Korea or wanted to, give up now. You can only go to South Korea through a third [another] country, but there\u2019s a tight electronic surveillance network to stop you from escaping to cities in southern China which are connected to third countries, and you will be mercilessly repatriated to North Korea if you are caught.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In agricultural regions of Liaoning Province as well, the police openly warned North Korean women illegally residing in the country after carrying out a surprise inspection of their phones that: \u201cThe moment you abandon the Chinese families you are living with and take off, you will be caught wherever you are in China. If you are caught, it\u2019s 100% certain you\u2019ll be repatriated to the North now that COVID-19 is over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The police in Liaoning Province further said: \u201cThe reason we haven\u2019t yet arrested you and sent you back to the North &#8211; even though we know you\u2019re illegally living here without IDs after being human trafficked to China &#8211; is because the Chinese family you live with is vouching for you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The inspections are connected to rumors that are spreading in China about North Korean defectors attempting t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o flee to South Korea now that pathways have once again opened following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, the reporting partner said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some cities of Liaoning Province last week, the police called female defectors with records of having contacted North Korea or South Korea into their offices and spent all day confirming their identities. The women were freed only after representatives of their Chinese families, their village heads and the heads of local women\u2019s organizations came and signed personal identity vouchers,\u201d he explained, adding, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;All this will force defectors in China to keep an even lower profile.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Translated by David Black.
