{"id":52997,"date":"2022-10-13T17:00:14","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=52997"},"modified":"2022-10-12T16:45:06","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T07:45:06","slug":"chongjin-residents-unhappy-order-contribute-100-kilograms-scrap-metal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/chongjin-residents-unhappy-order-contribute-100-kilograms-scrap-metal\/","title":{"rendered":"Chongjin residents unhappy with order to contribute 100 kilograms of scrap metal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chongjin residents are expressing their discontent after the authorities ordered each household in the city to contribute 100 kilograms in scrap metal, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A source in North Hamgyong Province told Daily NK on Tuesday that the neighborhood watch unit of Chongjin\u2019s Unhye-dong district convened a meeting on Oct. 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe meeting tasked each household with providing 100 kilograms of scrap metal by Dec. 10,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, the people\u2019s committee of Chongjin had previously held an emergency meeting of neighborhood office heads, with the committee handing families in each neighborhood watch unit an \u201cadditional\u201d task to procure scrap metal. The committee called on families to carry out this task by Dec. 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the neighborhood watch unit meetings that followed, the authorities reportedly emphasized that the \u201ctask to provide scrap metal is an important effort contributing to strengthening national defense,\u201d and that \u201cthis activity is not optional; all residents must unquestioningly carry it out by the designated date with a sense of patriotism, no exceptions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, North Korean authorities task families in each neighborhood watch unit with contributing a year\u2019s worth of all sorts of items, including scrap metal. The authorities evaluate residents\u2019 performance of these tasks through quarterly reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, Chongjin&#8217;s authorities caused the city&#8217;s residents significant consternation in early September when it called on them to carry out their fourth quarter scrap metal contributions early. With the authorities now forcing residents to provide an additional 100 kilograms of scrap metal per family \u201cas per an order from Pyongyang,&#8221; the city&#8217;s residents are expressing their extreme frustration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, one resident of Unhye-dong told Daily NK that he had been unable to contribute his fourth quarter allotment because he had neither the metal nor the cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen they called for another 100 kilograms, I thought I misheard at first,\u201d he said. \u201cWhere can you get 100 kilograms of scrap metal?
