{"id":52714,"date":"2022-09-07T10:00:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T01:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=52714"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:16:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:16:23","slug":"new-version-my-traveling-companion-hit-among-young-people-professional-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/new-version-my-traveling-companion-hit-among-young-people-professional-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"New version of &#8220;My Traveling Companion&#8221; a hit among young people and professional drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new version of the popular North Korean mobile app \u201cMy Traveling Companion\u201d was released recently, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A source in North Korea told Daily NK on Aug. 25 that version 4.0 of the smartphone app has been released, explaining the app is \u201cvery popular among young people and drivers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea\u2019s \u201cMy Traveling Companion\u201d is a navigation app like South Korea\u2019s Kakao Navi or TMAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early this year, North Korea\u2019s English-language newspaper Pyongyang Times reported that \u201cMy Traveling Companion 3.1\u201d was North Korea\u2019s most popular app last year in terms of users. It appears last year\u2019s Version 3.1 was updated to Version 4.0 this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said the app is convenient \u2014 drivers can find where they need to go without a map as long as they have the app on their phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrivers love it because they can instantly find areas and regions they are visiting for the first time,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source added that in North Korea, you cannot go wherever you like without a travel certificate or an authorization number, so people like opening the app\u2019s map just to look at it and imagine going to places they have never been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea restricts freedom of movement to better control its population. All North Koreans who travel beyond the borders of their province of residence must carry a certificate issued by the authorities. Sensitive regions designated as \u201cauthorization number zones\u201d require travelers to receive an authorization number first before entering them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Koreans who cannot freely travel due to travel restrictions can take digital trips as they gaze at the navigation app\u2019s map, said the source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany kids use the app almost as if it were entertainment,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, users living in areas that don&#8217;t have good reception to the country&#8217;s data network find that the app doesn&#8217;t work that well.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said many drivers say the app freezes in places with poor quality signals. Only people going on long journeys or to unfamiliar places really need it, but \u201cpeople going to places they always go don\u2019t use it,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey say the new version improved the signal reception issue, but I don\u2019t really know yet,\u201d he continued, adding, \u201cThe Rangnang Information Technology Exchange Center plans to take charge of developing the app and distributing it to mobile phone service centers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Koreans are making daily use of different apps as more and more of them have smartphones.
