(Rodong Sinmun-News1)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean authorities have issued an order to military education-related organizations, including Kim Il Sung Military University, to deploy personnel for the construction of 10,000 new housing units in Pyongyang\u2019s Hwasong area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Daily NK source in Pyongyang on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense issued the order on Feb. 13, calling on the recipients to respond with a loyal \u201cYes, sir!\u201d to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un\u2019s call to build yet another 10,000 housing units in the \u201crevolutionary capital.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, the order was issued the day after Kim attended the groundbreaking for the construction of the apartments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, it underscored that Kim \u2014 who has been unable to produce economic results that effectively bolster his authority in the 10 years since he took power \u2014 has called on the military to play a major role this year in achieving the goal of stabilizing economic livelihoods through \u201cconstruction politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the order, the Ministry of Defense called on units to respond to the expectations of the party, which hopes to open an age of \u201cgreat prosperity in construction\u201d with a \u201csea change\u201d by producing clear results in housing construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another glimpse of the intentions of the North Korean leadership can be found in the fact that military education institutions rather than regular combat units are being mobilized for the construction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cadets from military academies and officer training schools were deployed in months-long shifts during last year\u2019s construction of 10,000 housing units in Pyongyang\u2019s Songsin and Songhwa areas. This year\u2019s construction will presumably follow a similar pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authorities also clearly aim to actively mobilize idle personnel while emphasizing how the \u201centire party, entire people and entire military\u201d must carry out construction work together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said the party has ordered that the entire nation take part in a \u201clife-or-death\u201d effort to achieve efforts to carry out, supply, and otherwise support construction efforts, thinking of these projects as a \u201csecond post-war reconstruction.\u201d In this situation, the authorities believe it is better to mobilize more soldiers or military school cadets \u201cwho receive food from the state,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, military academy cadets are not fully embracing the authorities\u2019 call for them to become the \u201ctip of the spear\u201d of construction efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said students are sneering at the order, saying, \u201cWe come to school to become military and political leaders, but leave as construction workers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, military academies and officer training schools across the country have also been tasked with other construction tasks besides Kim\u2019s prized Hwasong apartment project in Pyongyang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, the Ministry of Defense issued orders to schools and students according to region, service and specialty, including Kim Il Sung Military University, Kim Jong Il University of Military Politics and Kim Il Sung University of Politics in Pyongyang, the Air Force Academy in North Hamgyong Province, and the \u201cNavy Academy\u201d in South Hamgyong Province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Please direct any comments or questions about this article to dailynkenglish@uni-media.net.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/20220222-4\/\">Read in Korean<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Korean authorities have issued an order to military education-related organizations, including Kim Il Sung Military University, to deploy personnel for the construction of 10,000 new housing units in Pyongyang\u2019s Hwasong area.
