{"id":50525,"date":"2022-02-09T14:26:26","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T05:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=50525"},"modified":"2022-02-08T14:28:30","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T05:28:30","slug":"following-mass-amnesty-last-month-north-korea-continues-to-monitor-those-released-for-ideological-laxity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/following-mass-amnesty-last-month-north-korea-continues-to-monitor-those-released-for-ideological-laxity\/","title":{"rendered":"Following mass amnesty last month, North Korea continues to monitor those released for &#8220;ideological laxity&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea\u2019s Ministry of Social Security has ordered regional offices to conduct one-on-one talks with former inmates recently released as part of a special amnesty issued by North Korean authorities late last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suggests the authorities aim to stop ex-cons \u2014 freed from their isolation \u2014 from becoming threats to regime stability by preventing potential \u201cideological laxity\u201d on their part, especially amid growing public suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Daily NK source in Gangwon Province on Monday, the Ministry of Social Security issued the order to its regional branches on Thursday, calling on the branches to document their chats and send the materials to Pyongyang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security authorities said the measure aimed for local branches to assume responsibility for settling the ex-inmates. They also called on officials to highlight the magnanimous policies of the party and state, which have opened the way for former prisoners to rehabilitate themselves. (KCNA\/Yonhap News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The released prisoners were also asked why they believed those excluded from the pardon received little or no official mercy, with the interviewer listing the names of unpardoned prisoners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This appears to be a typical North Korean-style \u201cpolicy of alienation\u201d that breeds jealousy and enmity between released prisoners and those that remain confined, with the former informing authorities about the ideological problems of the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is to say, the source believes the authorities\u2019 real intention with their individual discussions is to ferret out ideological malcontents who have made statements of enmity towards the party or state, suffer from \u201cdelusions\u201d regarding capitalism, or have expressed distrust of the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean authorities are also demanding that ex-prisoners tell them everything about fellow prisoners with &#8220;wayward ideological tendencies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, while the authorities may have considered the possibility that prisoners can \u201creform themselves,\u201d they are also compiling objective, detailed analysis of the ideological tendencies of prisoners as a contingency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the country\u2019s corrections bureau will send the analysis data to security personnel at prisons across the country once the Ministry of Social Security collects it.
