{"id":49146,"date":"2021-07-29T11:09:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-29T02:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=49146"},"modified":"2021-07-29T11:12:09","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T02:12:09","slug":"north-korea-forced-rural-relocation-schemes-sometimes-lead-heartbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-korea-forced-rural-relocation-schemes-sometimes-lead-heartbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea&#8217;s forced rural relocation schemes sometimes lead to heartbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people in North Korea continue to suffer heartbreak and other losses as the authorities encourage them to \u201cvolunteer\u201d to live in rural agricultural and mining communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Daily NK source in North Korea on Sunday, officials in the city of Pyongsong recently selected about 150 \u201cvolunteers\u201d for relocation to rural areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authorities carried out the selection until July 15, in accordance with orders from the Central Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One man in his 20s, surnamed Choe and from Ori-dong, Pyongsong, reportedly had to call off his engagement when his name was added to the \u201cvolunteer\u201d list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criteria for the latest selection was as follows. First, \u201cvolunteers\u201d had to have a bad family background. That is, they were the descendent of a landlord or capitalist, or somebody in their family collaborated with anti-communist forces during the Korean War or fled to South Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, one of their parents was from a rural region. That included people who did not serve in the military because they are only sons or have physical problems that disqualify them from military service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last, they needed a malcontent in their family. This included people who have done time in a disciplinary labor or reeducation camp for workplace negligence or creating \u201csocial issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, under the guise of \u201cconsideration by the Workers\u2019 Party,\u201d the authorities selected many young people to whom none of these criteria applied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such case was Choe. He had worked as an engineer in an irrigation machinery factory in Pyongsong for 12 years.
