{"id":49110,"date":"2021-07-23T09:41:13","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T00:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=49110"},"modified":"2021-07-23T09:45:25","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T00:45:25","slug":"sunchon-phosphatic-fertilizer-factory-still-unable-produce-fertilizer-properly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/sunchon-phosphatic-fertilizer-factory-still-unable-produce-fertilizer-properly\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory is still unable to produce fertilizer properly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory \u2014 promoted by North Korean authorities as \u201ca creation of self-reliant strength and prosperity\u201d \u2014 has been unable to properly produce phosphatic fertilizer since the plant\u2019s completion over a year ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To escape criticism over the plant\u2019s non-existent production, however, the authorities are reportedly employing the \u201ccrude strategem\u201d of shipping fertilizer produced at other plants from the Sunchon factory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a phone conversation with Daily NK on Wednesday, a source in North Korea said the Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory has been unable to produce a finished product, even though the plant was completed over a year and two months ago. \u201cIt\u2019s completely unable to produce ammonium phosphate,\u201d he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. \u201cAnd as for superphosphate of lime, it\u2019s simply being packaged with fertilizer produced in other factories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory is supposed to produce a dry fertilizer synthesized from ammonium phosphate and superphosphate of lime. Unable to produce ammonium phosphate, however, the plant has been unable to ship phosphatic fertilizer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant has reportedly experienced supply problems with sodium sulfate, which is needed during the calcination process for white phosphorus, silica, and sodium sulfate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodium sulfate \u2014 called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yusan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in North Korea \u2014 is generally produced in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province. Image: Roodng Sinmun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, although the factory was designed to be fully automated, only manual production is currently possible because the country has been unable to import semiconductor equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pak Pong Ju, then vice president of the State Affairs Commission, attended the completion ceremony for the plant in May of last year. He said the plant, designed to \u201cproduce large amounts of concentrated phosphatic fertilizer from low-grade ore suitable to North Korean conditions,\u201d was equipped to reduce labor requirements by \u201crealizing automation and systemization from the injection of raw materials to the packaging of products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, however, it seems there were only plans to automate the plant.
