{"id":47752,"date":"2021-02-18T14:00:04","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T05:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=47752"},"modified":"2021-02-17T12:21:32","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T03:21:32","slug":"north-korea-provides-gifts-to-children-for-kim-jong-ils-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-korea-provides-gifts-to-children-for-kim-jong-ils-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea provides gifts to children for Kim Jong Il&#8217;s birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily NK has confirmed that North Korean authorities provided children with gifts for Kim Jong Il\u2019s birthday (Feb. 16), one of North Korea\u2019s biggest holidays, despite the nation\u2019s economic woes amid the COVID-19 crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a phone conversation with Daily NK on Tuesday, a source in North Hamgyong Province said children in local elementary schools and kindergartens in Hoeryong were given sweets and school supplies on Feb. 14 to mark the 79th \u201cDay of the Shining Star,\u201d as the holiday is called in North Korea. \u201cAs the gifts were quite miserable compared to last year, locals have been unable to hide their surprise,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a photo of the presents obtained through the source, the sweets included a bag of candy, two bags of snacks, a bag of bean candies and two rice crackers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school supplies included 72 pencils, eight erasers, a set of 12 crayons, a 12-color watercoloring set, two gel ink pens, three ball pens, one pencil sharpener, one pencil case, four rulers and a school supply bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authorities reportedly gave these supplies only to children entering elementary school from the upper class of kindergarten.
