The establishment of the center was the first \u201cratified task\u201d handed down after the Eighth Party Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said the authorities announced the creation of the \u201cLife Science Information and Technology Service Center,\u201d stressing that the biotech industry is a leading industry of the 21st century and \u201cone of the highgrounds scientists and researchers must occupy during the period of the new five-year plan, along with the IT industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source told Daily NK that given the many targets set by the five-year plan in the biotech sector, the authorities created the service center within the State Academy of Sciences \u201cso that academics and related researchers can discuss and share research results in the biotech field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43265\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d.jpg\" alt=\"state academy of sciences\" width=\"768\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d-696x288.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kim Jong Un poses with staff of the State Academy of Sciences in 2014. \/ Image: Rodong Shinmun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State Academy of Sciences already had several bioengineering-related institutes, labs, testing centers and factories, including the Bioengineering Research Center, but the party reportedly noted the significance of the new center by stressing how sharing research information to continuously develop pharmaceutical products in the \u201cbiotech era\u201d is \u201cclosely connected to improving the lives of the people and promoting health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, North Korea has in fact stressed that the nation must rebuild a \u201cNorth Korean-style\u201d biotech production system in a \u201cmodern way\u201d by referencing foreign biotech accomplishments as the biotech industry enables the development of genetically modified agricultural seeds and \u201cmodern drug treatment technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By \u201cmodern drug treatment technology,\u201d North Korea is referring to stem cell technology to regenerate damaged organs and genome editing to treat genetic diseases. Within the country\u2019s medical community, these are called \u201cthe holy grails of treatment technologies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea finished recruiting and organizing staff for the new center as well as readying its office late last month.
