{"id":47073,"date":"2020-11-30T13:00:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T04:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=47073"},"modified":"2020-11-30T13:20:47","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T04:20:47","slug":"economic-difficulties-lead-downsizing-end-year-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/economic-difficulties-lead-downsizing-end-year-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic difficulties lead to downsizing of end-of-year events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea\u2019s end-of-the-year \u201cannual evaluation meetings\u201d are being held with less fanfare this year, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In some counties [of Yangang Province], the annual events began on Nov. 10 among branches of the Socialist Women&#8217;s Union of Korea,&#8221; a Yanggang Province-based source told Daily NK on Nov. 16, speaking on condition of anonymity. \u201cAlthough the events are proceeding as usual, after-party meals are not being held and the overall atmosphere of the celebrations has changed.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to her, there has been an increase in other local organizations finishing their events with meals where only a few people gather together. \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen such a [downsizing] in these events since before 2010,\u201d she noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reasons why these annual events have been scaled down is because the country has intensified its COVID-19 control measures &#8211; yet another sign that North Koreans are actively practicing \u201csocial distancing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The North Korean government has continued to emphasize that people \u201cconserve\u201d what they have as much as possible, particularly since the country\u2019s breadbasket in North and South Hwanghae provinces were hit hard by typhoons and floods earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt used to be common to eat in groups but things have changed this year,\u201d the source said, adding, \u201cCompared to last year, the economic situation of households is not that good, so there are members of the Socialist Women\u2019s Union of Korea who support [the downsizing of the annual events].\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also those, however, who have expressed disappointment at the downsizing of the events.
