{"id":46765,"date":"2020-10-19T15:54:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T06:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=46765"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:16:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:16:06","slug":"hyesan-apartment-buildings-hire-security-guards-keep-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/hyesan-apartment-buildings-hire-security-guards-keep-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Hyesan apartment buildings hire security guards to keep watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some apartments in Hyesan whose residents are mainly government cadres and members of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donju <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have recently begun hiring security guards and are paying them monthly wages, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A source in Yanggang Province told the Daily NK on Friday that the guards are being paid a fixed amount on a set day of the month when each household pays apartment-related fees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North Korea, the \u201csecurity guard\u201d occupation first appeared in Pyongyang during the early 1990s. At the time, ruling party cadres would hire security guards as part of efforts to hide secrets they did not want anyone else to know. Later, party cadres in Rason and Sinuiju began hiring security guards as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, security guards were hired on an as-needed basis at apartments in Hyesan and only select households had to pay for their services. Later, however, apartment residents decided to give security guards a monthly salary by collecting fees from each household.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security guards receive different salaries depending on the apartment. The average monthly salary a security guard can receive is around RMB 600 (around USD 90). The occupation is now popular among many young and middle-aged people as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among North Koreans, there are broadly two reactions to security guard work. The dominant one is pessimism: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to steal, so what security [does anyone need]?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is to say, locals feeling the country\u2019s recent economic difficulties due to COVID-19 restrictions think there is little need for anything to be protected anymore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other North Koreans, however, think the \u201csecurity guard industry\u201d may grow in the future.
