{"id":46229,"date":"2020-08-27T16:54:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T07:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=46229"},"modified":"2020-08-27T16:58:39","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T07:58:39","slug":"south-korea-mister-trot-hit-among-many-women-north-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/south-korea-mister-trot-hit-among-many-women-north-korea\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea&#8217;s &#8220;Mister Trot&#8221; is a hit among many women in North Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A popular South Korean TV show, \u201cMister Trot,\u201d has become hugely popular among North Korean women in their 30s to their 60s and its popularity is expanding from the Sino-North Korean border region to inner areas of the country, a Daily NK source reported on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, those who initially just watched clips of the program are now trying to get full episodes. \u201cPeople are saying you\u2019re not keeping up with the [latest] trend unless you\u2019re watching Mister Trot,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen they get together, people who have seen the videos secretly gossip about which of the seven contestants will be chosen,\u201d the source explained. \u201cThey even take a vote among themselves, discussing each contestant\u2019s strengths and why they like them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since North Koreans are unable to take part in the show\u2019s real-time voting, it appears they are enjoying the show by ranking the contestants among themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are very interested in not only the on-stage performances, but also the clips of the contestants going about their daily lives,\u201d the source further reported. \u201cThey are almost obsessed with learning more about the contestants and want to see more performances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North Korea, South Korean dramas or variety shows are used as a \u201ctool\u201d to gauge South Korea\u2019s level of economic progress and how people live. Accordingly, the snapshots of contestants\u2019 everyday lives are popular because viewers feel as if they are right there with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trot used to be very popular in North Korea. In 2001, the trot singer Yonja Kim held concerts in Pyongyang and Hamhung that were great successes. At the time, even Kim Jong Il took interest and made an appearance at the Hamhung concert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the popularity of trot has waned over time as it became associated with older people, it has recently made a resurgence thanks to the emergence of the South Korean show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrot was not so popular,\u201d the source confirmed, adding, \u201cBut it has blown up after [the show] became a hit with middle-aged women involved in smuggling near the border.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to him, women in this age group were captivated by the earnest melodies and because the lyrics \u201creally spoke to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WIDENING POPULARITY<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMister Trot\u201d has proven to be popular among young people as well as middle-aged women in North Korea, according to the source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays even people in their 20s like trot,\u201d the source explained. \u201cThe popularity comes from the lyrics, which describe feelings such as love, affection and longing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put off by the monotony of North Korean songs about revolution and struggle, young people have taken an interest in songs by South Korean idol groups, which are trendy and speak their language. It is believed that idol groups such as BTS and IZ*ONE are very popular among North Korean youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be that as it may, North Koreans often have trouble understanding the song lyrics due to the language barrier produced by many decades of division and the frequent use of loanwords in South Korea.
