RMB 100 is around USD 14.<\/p>\n<p>While portions of laborers&#8217; salaries have long been taken out for loyalty fund contributions, the source&#8217;s report suggests that North Korean officials are taking out even more money from salaries than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The reason may be that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to less labor contracts with Chinese companies, which has led to a fall in money available to contribute to the loyalty fund. North Korean officials may be trying to make up for the loss by siphoning off money set aside for workers&#8217; meals.<\/p>\n<p>Daily NK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/%E5%8C%97-%EB%B9%84%EC%83%81-%EC%83%81%ED%99%A9%EC%9D%B4%EB%8B%A4%E4%B8%AD-%ED%8C%8C%EA%B2%AC-%EB%AC%B4%EC%97%AD%EC%9D%BC%EA%BE%BC%EC%97%90-%EB%B0%A9%EC%97%AD%EC%9E%90%EA%B8%88\/\">previously reported<\/a> (in Korean) that North Korean authorities have been demanding excessive contributions into the loyalty fund, despite the fact that China&#8217;s economy has been suffering.<\/p>\n<p>According to the source, North Korean laborers in China are suffering because they do not have enough money to pay for meals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three hundred RMB will buy [enough] rice, a simple selection of vegetables, kimchi, and a little bit of meat for one person [to eat over a month],&#8221; the source said. &#8220;Now, because they don&#8217;t even have enough money to buy food, they&#8217;re having trouble eating properly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He further told Daily NK that laborers are not able to eat side dishes with meat at all &#8211; something they had eaten occasionally in the past &#8211; because they do not have enough money.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46140\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/1597734827379-e1597985862483-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/1597734827379-e1597985862483-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/1597734827379-e1597985862483-280x420.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/1597734827379-e1597985862483.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A typical meal for a North Korean worker at a factory in Liaoning Province.
