Korean patrol boat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angry over demands for bribes by North Korean patrols, several Chinese fishing boats intentionally rammed into a North Korean patrol boat near Sinuiju in late July, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Daily NK source in China on Aug. 12, four 20 to 30-meter-long Chinese fishing boats \u201cteamed up\u201d to ram into the patrol boat near the Yalu River delta. \u201cThe [collision] threw seven North Korean sailors into the sea and several are still missing,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patrol boat was affiliated with North Korea\u2019s 52nd Fleet. The 52nd Fleet was once controlled by the country\u2019s navy, but North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered the fleet\u2019s command to be transferred to the Ministry of State Security\u2019s Border Patrol Command in 2015. The fleet is reportedly in charge of patrolling waters in the West Sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, the collision was due to the \u201ccorrupt\u201d transactions that have long occurred between North Korean patrol boats and Chinese fishing vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean patrol boats have long cracked down on Chinese boats entering North Korean waters to fish, but have simultaneously demanded bribes ranging from RMB 1,000 (around USD 144) to RMB 10,000 (around USD 1,442) to \u201cturn a blind eye.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese vessels have paid the bribes with the thinking that it is better to pay a \u201cfee\u201d than to be forced to hand over their entire catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean patrols have long used the bribes to line their own pockets and pay mandatory contributions to various \u201cnational projects.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their source of illegal income was disrupted when Chinese vessels vanished from the Yalu River after the outbreak of COVID-19 earlier this year.
