{"id":45850,"date":"2020-07-31T18:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T09:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=45850"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:50:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:50:59","slug":"kim-jong-un-national-defense-university-students-participate-october-military-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/kim-jong-un-national-defense-university-students-participate-october-military-parade\/","title":{"rendered":"KJU National Defense University students to participate in Oct. military parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Jong Un National Defense University will be sending a group of students to participate in North Korea\u2019s planned military parade on Oct. 10 &#8211; the first time the school has ever officially taken part in a military parade, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a source Daily NK spoke with on Wednesday, the military school, which is also known as Battalion 852 of the Korean People\u2019s Army, has already selected participants and completed training for the event following orders by the country&#8217;s leadership to participate in the parade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said that around 600 students were chosen from each department of the school to participate in the parade by the university\u2019s administrative department and relevant military staff officers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will assemble alongside other parade participants at the April 25 Hotel in Pyongyang on Aug. 1, the source added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first time that students attending the university will officially take part in a military parade. The university trains professionals to research and develop strategic weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). In fact, the university\u2019s inclusion in the parade may be connected with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un\u2019s ambition to deploy \u201cnew strategic weapons.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, university students chosen for the parade have been working hard to train for the event given that they must \u201cshow off\u201d the \u201ccombat strength and power\u201d of their institution, which trains science and technology professionals working on national defense who have \u201cstrengthened North Korea\u2019s war deterrence capabilities in every way under the guidance of the ruling communist party.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is reportedly a lot of pressure on the students to avoid damaging the reputation of the institution given that this is the first time it is officially participating in a military parade. The school dean has been put in charge of the school\u2019s preparation for the event and a former soldier who has \u201crelevant experience\u201d has been selected as a flag bearer, according to the source.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source further reported that school authorities have intensified an effort to use the military parade as an opportunity to show the \u201cpride\u201d and \u201cself-respect\u201d students have at the school, which is named after the North Korean leader. In short, the students are being told to \u201crepay\u201d the communist party\u2019s trust in placing the university into a \u201cplace of honor\u201d by &#8220;putting their all&#8221; into practicing for the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to have students from the school participate in the event is also having an impact on the school\u2019s academic schedule, according to the source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe school typically only has a single vacation every year in the winter,\u201d the source said. \u201cThis means that lectures continue even while other major universities are on summer break.
