{"id":45523,"date":"2020-07-03T10:20:14","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T01:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=45523"},"modified":"2026-04-05T16:04:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T07:04:44","slug":"12-shellfish-harvesters-die-north-pyongan-province","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/12-shellfish-harvesters-die-north-pyongan-province\/","title":{"rendered":"12 shellfish harvesters die in North Pyongan Province"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twelve shellfish harvesters recently drowned in Chulsan County, North Pyongan Province, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deaths came as companies in the province are turning to shellfish harvesting following an order by the government to increase foreign currency earnings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHigh grade [grade 1 and grade 2] factories and companies have been ordered to earn foreign currency this year, although they were exempted from engaging in such activities last year,\u201d a source in the province told Daily NK on June 21. \u201cThese factories and companies in North Pyongan Province have sent workers to harvest shellfish in the [Chulsan County] area to make money.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shellfish hunters in the area typically rely on \u201cpredictions\u201d of when the low tide begins and board wooden boats to harvest the sea creatures in the mud flats.
