{"id":45510,"date":"2020-07-02T12:31:33","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T03:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=45510"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:50:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:50:23","slug":"defector-families-face-resentment-border-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/defector-families-face-resentment-border-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Defector families face resentment in the border region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea\u2019s recent efforts to promote anti-defector sentiment are having some effect in the Sino-North Korean border area, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause of the recent leaflet incident, crackdowns in border areas have become more frequent,\u201d a North Hamgyong Province-based source told Daily NK yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increase in crackdowns on certain market-related activities has led to growing resentment against families of defectors, the source said, adding that the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0crackdowns have also led to a decrease in smudging activities and the arrest of several moneylenders in Ryanggang and North Hamgyong provinces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Koreans in the area seem to be increasingly wary of defector families and fear being dragged into problems because of them. Life for ordinary residents in cities on the Sino-North Korean border has become increasingly difficult as the crackdowns have resulted in less products available at markets and very little remittance money coming in from abroad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difficult situation has led many residents to complain about defector families, with some going as far as branding them &#8220;collaborators.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven children of defector families are immediately treated as outcasts.
