{"id":45269,"date":"2020-06-11T10:52:04","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T01:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=45269"},"modified":"2026-04-05T14:35:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T05:35:23","slug":"mobile-money-an-increasingly-popular-way-of-gifting-to-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/mobile-money-an-increasingly-popular-way-of-gifting-to-others\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Mobile money&#8221;: an increasingly popular way of gifting to others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Koreans in Pyongyang are increasingly sending mobile phone minutes to others as gifts instead of attending birthdays or weddings as the country continues to restrict face-to-face meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith restrictions on movement, events and meetings due to the coronavirus, it is becoming commonplace for people to send others \u2018mobile money\u2019 as a celebratory gift,\u201d a source in Pyongyang told Daily NK on June 8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMobile money\u201d refers to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-koreans-build-nascent-fintech-infrastructure-with-mobile-money\/\">service<\/a> where users can exchange minutes with other mobile phones users, essentially allowing people to \u201ctop-up\u201d others who do not have enough minutes for voice calls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents in Pyongyang who come from areas outside Pyongyang can\u2019t return home due to the coronavirus and are unable to see their friends,\u201d the source told Daily NK. \u201cWhile confined in their dormitories, students began sending mobile money instead of gifts for various celebrations at home or their friends\u2019 birthdays, and this practice is spreading to other areas of the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>AS SIMPLE AS CAN BE<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sending mobile money is relatively simple. Anyone with a mobile money card, which is akin to a checking card for mobile phone charges, can send minutes to others by entering the phone company\u2019s three-digit ID number, the amount to be sent, the phone number of the recipient, and the six-digit password on the card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a subscriber of Koryolink, the most popular telecommunications provider in Pyongyang, can transmit mobile money to another individual by entering *999* followed by the amount of funds to be transferred, the phone number of the recipient, the six-digit phone money card password and then \u201c#.\u201d Kang Song NET customers would enter *929* instead of *999*.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People around North Korea view mobile money as a useful way of sending small gifts of money because of its simplicity,\u201d the source explained. \u201cMany are even saying that we have become completely capitalist since we now send [mobile] money in lieu of gifts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>IT BENEFITS THE STATE, TOO<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The practice also benefits the North Korean state because it is a relatively effective way of collecting foreign currency held by ordinary citizens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile cards can be purchased with foreign currency such as dollars, yuan or euros,\u201d the source explained. \u201cYou can also use North Korean won, but that makes purchasing the cards more expensive so people try to pay in foreign currency when possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, however, the country\u2019s authorities reportedly capped mobile money transfers to just one transaction of KPW 500 per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, KPW 75 currently buys just one won worth of mobile money.
