North Korean human rights papers have been published by the Korea Institute for National Unification and Korean Bar Association before, but there is a difference in scope. This human rights white paper was written based on the comprehensive testimonial materials of 531 defectors. The Database Center stresses that in contrast with the basic North Korean human rights paper, they objectively weighed the testimonies of defectors. <\/p>\n
Mr. Yoon expressed that it eliminated a private interpretation and made the testimonies into objective statistical data. Further, the compilation of materials, editing, classification, and analysis were completed according to a scientific database system. In this white paper, an objectivity with which one can observe the real situation of North Korean human rights can be sufficiently found. <\/p>\n
The white paper, through testimonies of 531 people, mentions information which corresponds to 2,975 victims who suffered human rights violations, perpetrators, and eyewitnesses. <\/p>\n
Director Yoon explained in an interview with DailyNK on this date, “The interview results with defectors were classified into 16 areas and were organized by detailed items, so that the emphasis was given to guaranteeing objectivity. Through an overall statistical organization, submitted data were presented as graphs and charts, so private extra-interpretations or explanations were minimized.” <\/p>\n
Mr. Yoon added, “The meaning of the human rights white paper to be published this time is that the North Korean human rights situation is still difficult and the testimonies of around 500 defectors adequately explain the North Korean human rights situation.” <\/p>\n
He emphasized that through this white paper, “There has been a lot of discussion until now regarding the credibility of the North Korean human rights situation, but through the paper, such confusion will be eliminated.” <\/p>\n
Concomitantly, the paper contains 3,903 records of occurrences by mentioning the events which defectors endured while residing in North Korea. This paper is seen as a critical material for understanding the whole human rights situation in North Korean society. <\/p>\n
He said, “The white paper will testify to the fact that the North Korean human rights situation, which has been introduced by international society, is the truth, including human rights violations in political prisons, political freedom inside North Korea, and the realm of cultural rights.” <\/p>\n
He said, “We can expect that this paper will not only stop at spreading awareness of North Korea’s human rights situation, but wiIl bring about protection of victims, improvements, and aid against North Korean human rights violations.” <\/p>\n
Mr. Yoon said, “Through this opportunity of publishing the human rights paper, the Archives on North Korean Human Rights, under the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, will officially launch. Subsequently, the archives will provide data regarding the reality of North Korean human rights to the government and domestic NGOs who want such information.” <\/p>\n
The Database Center, in the last four years, interviewed a total of 2,161 defectors. The Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, which was founded in 2004, has built a database by collecting materials regarding prisoners of the Korean War, political prison camps, other detention system, and abductees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
