{"id":44348,"date":"2020-04-06T08:18:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-05T23:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=44348"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:49:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:49:57","slug":"kim-il-sung-university-professors-under-investigation-for-misconduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/kim-il-sung-university-professors-under-investigation-for-misconduct\/","title":{"rendered":"Kim Il Sung Univ. professors under investigation for misconduct"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two undergraduate professors at North Korea\u2019s prestigious Kim Il Sung University are currently under investigation by a school committee for misconduct that occurred during the evaluation of a student\u2019s academic dissertation, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sub-committee created by the school\u2019s Workers\u2019 Party of Korea (WPK) committee is currently investigating the misconduct, sources in Pyongyang told Daily NK on Mar. 30.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MISCONDUCT REVEALED<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Daily NK sources in Pyongyang, a student in the undergraduate natural sciences department at Kim Il Sung University was nominated to write a bachelor\u2019s dissertation and participated in a dissertation defense administered by the national committee on Mar. 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean undergraduate students typically write what is called a \u201ccandidate bachelor\u2019s thesis\u201d while graduate students in the country write \u201cbachelor\u2019s dissertations,\u201d which are similar to master\u2019s theses written by students in South Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some undergraduate students who have good grades and are writing on topics that contribute to the \u201cnational development\u201d of the country in a significant way are reportedly allowed to write bachelor\u2019s dissertations instead of candidate bachelor\u2019s theses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidate bachelor theses are evaluated by university committees, but bachelor dissertations are reviewed by a dedicated state-run committee. Only a student that has passed the oral examination and an interview (in both Korean and one foreign language) administered by this national committee can officially receive a graduate degree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two professors on the student\u2019s dissertation committee were also present at the defense, but problems arose when the lower-ranking academic advisor struggled with the questions posed by members of the national committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advisor in question was working in a field unrelated to the topic and failed to respond properly to questions posed by the committee in both Korean and English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suspecting that the advisor was involved in some sort of misconduct, the national committee alerted the Kim Il Sung University party committee to the issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An investigation by the university party committee found that the elder of the two advisors had purposely added a former student turned professor to the dissertation committee to help the man\u2019s career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The younger advisor was an assistant professor and university rules stipulate that assistant professors can only become full-time faculty members after taking part in a dissertation committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The misconduct was serious enough to warrant further investigation by a committee headed by Kim Il Sung University Vice-president Jong Man Ho.
