{"id":43832,"date":"2020-02-14T15:00:29","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T06:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=43832"},"modified":"2026-04-06T14:00:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T05:00:05","slug":"kim-jong-un-orders-special-meal-soldiers-okryu-gwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/kim-jong-un-orders-special-meal-soldiers-okryu-gwan\/","title":{"rendered":"Kim Jong Un orders special meal for soldiers at Okryu-gwan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered Pyongyang\u2019s Okryu-gwan restaurant to serve breakfast to soldiers on the morning of Kim Jong Il\u2019s birthday (Feb. 16), Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speculation had abounded in the military that the holiday banquet traditionally held for soldiers on Feb. 16 would be cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily NK sources reported on Feb. 12 that Kim ordered the restaurant to provide breakfast for soldiers as part of efforts to show the world that North Korea \u201cstands strong\u201d in the face of the coronavirus outbreak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being famous for its Pyongyang cold noodles, Okryu-gwan\u2019s best dishes are actually sturgeon and soft-shelled turtle. Okryu-gwan often features in North Korea propaganda as an example of Kim&#8217;s love for the people. North Koreans involved in special events, conferences or state-sponsored visits to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun are frequently treated to meals there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Jong Un reportedly issued orders for Okryu-gwan to serve North Korea\u2019s \u201cbest dishes\u201d &#8211; including meat soup, sturgeon, and soft-shelled turtle &#8211; to soldiers in celebration of Kim Jong Il\u2019s birthday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each political department was ordered to select military officers and soldiers to join the feast at the restaurant. Daily NK sources said that most of the soldiers attending the meal will come from military bases around Pyongyang, including from units guarding the headquarters of the military\u2019s general staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The military has extolled Kim\u2019s orders as coming from the \u201cgreat love of the Supreme Leader\u201d toward the military.
