{"id":43263,"date":"2019-12-31T14:00:13","date_gmt":"2019-12-31T05:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=43263"},"modified":"2020-01-17T08:49:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T23:49:35","slug":"sources-president-of-state-academy-of-sciences-dismissed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/sources-president-of-state-academy-of-sciences-dismissed\/","title":{"rendered":"Sources: President of State Academy of Sciences dismissed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The president of North Korea\u2019s State Academy of Sciences, Jang Chol, was recently dismissed from his position and sent to the countryside for \u201crevolutionary education\u201d in South Pyongan Province, Daily NK learned on Dec. 29.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the head of the country\u2019s largest scientific academy, Jang had managed the country\u2019s science and technology research activities, including the academy\u2019s key role in North Korea\u2019s nuclear program. He had succeeded Pyun Yon-rip, who left the post in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jang had worked in close quarters with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to develop the country\u2019s science and technology sectors. His dismissal has created an atmosphere of anxiety among scientists and other workers at the academy, sources said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>FAILURE TO FOLLOW ORDERS<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJang was removed from his post for not properly carrying out the government\u2019s policies,\u201d one source told Daily NK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was criticized for failing to execute this year\u2019s science and technology research projects in line with Kim Jong Un\u2019s wishes,\u201d the source continued. \u201cThe budget for science and technology research has increased over the years, but the academy failed to make any major breakthroughs. Ultimately, Jang was held responsible for this failure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43265\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d.jpg\" alt=\"state academy of sciences\" width=\"768\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kjusacadscipy_rs150114d-696x288.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kim Jong Un poses with staff of the State Academy of Sciences in 2014. \/ Image: Rodong Shinmun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Kim Jong Un had paid a visit to the State Academy of Sciences and, describing the institute as the \u201ccradle of [North Korea\u2019s] self-reliance,\u201d charged it with taking the lead in North Korea\u2019s economic development and efforts to \u201covercome\u201d international sanctions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to the Academy of National Defense Science, which has consistently produced results in its research, however, the State Academy of Sciences failed to produce results worthy of note.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe academy made little real progress in meeting its goals under Jang,\u201d a source said. \u201cThe facility did not properly encourage or incentivize its scientists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>FALLING MORALE AT THE ACADEMY<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other officials at the academy were punished apart from Jang, according to sources. Internally, the academy has been holding self-criticism sessions and a \u201csolidarity rally\u201d aimed at rectifying past mistakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMorale at the State Academy of Sciences has fallen due to Jang\u2019s dismissal,\u201d one source told Daily NK. \u201cJang\u2019s absence may change the atmosphere at the academy for the better, but I doubt it will really impact the academy\u2019s quality of research.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, Jang gave a speech at a ceremony in Kim Il Sung Square to mark the two year anniversary of Kim Jong Un being appointed as chairman of the State Affairs Commission.
