{"id":42869,"date":"2019-11-15T08:13:58","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T23:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=42869"},"modified":"2020-01-17T08:49:39","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T23:49:39","slug":"north-korea-conducts-anti-aircraft-defense-drills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-korea-conducts-anti-aircraft-defense-drills\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea conducts anti-aircraft defense drills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidst strong condemnations of US-South Korean air force drills, North Korea recently held anti-aircraft defense drills among the civilian population and in the military, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several Daily NK sources in both Ryanggang and South Pyongan provinces reported on Nov. 14 that North Korean authorities had civilians take part in &#8220;blackout&#8221; training on Nov. 12 and anti-aircraft defense drills on Nov. 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blackout training held on Nov. 12 had North Koreans cover the windows of their homes to prevent any light from seeping through after the sounding of an air raid siren. Local police and Ministry of State Security (MSS) offices conducted joint patrols to ensure the populace complied with the blackout order. Similar drills involving civilians have been held in the past, including during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-korea-prepares-for-annual-winter-military-exercises\/\">winter military exercises<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anti-aircraft defense drills on Nov. 13 began after the sounding of an air raid alarm twice. Worker-Peasant Red Guards and Young Red Guards wearing regular military uniforms pretended to be the enemy attacking and \u201coccupied\u201d their assigned target areas. The elderly, women and children were sent to assigned evacuation points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean officials did not alert the populace about the training through the country\u2019s network of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inminban<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; instead, the country\u2019s \u201cemergency contact network\u201d was used to initiate the training, Daily NK sources reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The authorities] aimed to impress upon the people need to be attentive [toward the possibility of an invasion] while making it seem like a real war had broken out,\u201d a Ryanggang Province-based source explained. \u201cThe drills were likely aimed to check how ideologically ready the people are [for the outbreak of war].&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean officials also announced the holding of a compulsory evacuation training from 9 AM on Nov. 14. North Koreans were forced to head to assigned shelters along with backpacks with food for lunch and emergency food, and authorities emphasized that they carefully package and transport portraits of the Kim family in their homes as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the drills, the authorities told people how to act during a time of war and conducted ideological education,\u201d the source said. \u201cNorth Korean officials jammed signals in Hyesan and other areas near the Sino-North Korean border to prevent people from using Chinese cell phones and prevent any information from seeping out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea\u2019s military also held anti-aircraft defense drills, sources told Daily NK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe headed to bed at 9:40 PM on Nov. 13 after our nightly check at 9:30 AM, but at 9:50 AM an order came down suddenly to line up,\u201d a Daily NK military source based in North Pyongan Province said. \u201cThe military authorities decided to suddenly conduct a review of the military\u2019s wartime mobilization posture.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source reported that while the soldiers had expected to be involved in a military exercise, they weren\u2019t sure what time it would occur. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll soldiers on the base are tense because it&#8217;s clear the higher ups plan to conduct a review of the fully-equipped troops in an underground facility,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Please direct any comments or questions about this article to dailynkenglish@gmail.com.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amidst strong condemnations of US-South Korean air force drills, North Korea recently held anti-aircraft defense drills among the civilian population and in the military, Daily NK has learned.\u00a0 Several Daily NK sources in both Ryanggang and South Pyongan provinces reported on Nov. 14 that North Korean authorities had civilians take part in &#8220;blackout&#8221; training on [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":130,"featured_media":42870,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"wikipediapreview_detectlinks":true,"footnotes":""},"categories":[67],"tags":[135],"class_list":["post-42869","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-propaganda"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.7 (Yoast SEO v28.1) -
