The mobile phone is now a necessity for us.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daily NK has previously reported on the growing perception that mobile phones are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/once-a-luxury-smartphones-now-a-ne\/\">required item<\/a> for many North Koreans.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source in Pyongyang emphasized that the mobile phone has made it easier for North Koreans to communicate than ever before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You make calls anywhere within the country with a mobile phone so it makes it easy to exchange news,\u201d the source said. \u201cWe\u2019ve entered an electronic age, and we\u2019ve left the days of sending a letter and waiting a month for it to arrive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source also noted that North Koreans only use the post office like they did before the mid-1990s to send packages. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You don\u2019t see anyone sending letters anymore. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t as many sending packages either because now many people use delivery services,&#8221; the source added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University students no longer need to spend time looking for information in a mass of printed materials. There are an increasing number of students who use the search function on their smartphones for their research, other Daily NK sources in Pyongyang reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cResearchers and technicians no longer have to waste energy traveling long distances to libraries to look for the information they need,\u201d said one of the sources. \u201cHomemakers can also use cooking apps to learn how to cook, so they\u2019re spending more and more time looking at their mobile phones.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, not all of the effects of smartphones have been positive.
