Korean restaurants ramp up &#8216;education sessions&#8217; on news of group defection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Following the group defection of 13 of its<br \/>\noverseas restaurant workers to South Korea, Pyongyang has scrambled to tighten<br \/>\nthe noose around its other workers, claiming that the mass defection was merely<br \/>\na ploy by South Korean intelligence and warning&nbsp;them against establishing<br \/>\ncontact with any South Koreans, Daily NK has learned. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cRumors<br \/>\nabout the group\u2019s escape have spread not only through North Korean restaurants<br \/>\nin China but also among residents living in the (Sino-North Korea) border<br \/>\narea,\u201d a source close to North Korean affairs in China told Daily NK on April<br \/>\n11.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of restlessness since rumor is that the cadre<br \/>\nresponsible for supervising the other workers was the one that led the group in<br \/>\ntheir escape to the South, and this could spark ideological instability among<br \/>\nother North Korean cadres.&#8221;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Assistant managers of North Korean<br \/>\nrestaurants in China\u2019s Dandong began &#8216;education sessions\u2019 on Monday morning,<br \/>\ntelling their North Korean staff that the escape was a scheme plotted by the<br \/>\nSouth\u2019s National Intelligence Service (NIS). They described the escape as<br \/>\n\u201cnonsensical\u201d given the unlikelihood of all 13 agreeing to leave their parents<br \/>\nand relatives behind in the North and cited that in itself as being \u201cevidence<br \/>\nof the group being tricked into the escape,\u201d according to the source. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe workers were told, \u2018Starting from<br \/>\ntoday, you must keep up your guard with all customers, as there may be spies<br \/>\nfrom South Korea who will watch your movements and then send out false media<br \/>\nreports\u2019,\u201d she said, citing a restaurant employee with whom she spoke. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She added, \u201cThey were also threatened and<br \/>\ntold that if they\u2019re not careful about what they say and do, they may end up<br \/>\ntaking part in slander against the \u2018highest dignity\u2019 (Kim Jong Un) without even<br \/>\nrealizing it.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A separate source in China visited a North<br \/>\nKorean restaurant called Ryugyong near the Zhonglian International Hotel in<br \/>\nDandong on Monday for lunch and described the workers there being \u201cmore than<br \/>\nvigilant,\u201d making it difficult to chat with her. This was despite there being<br \/>\nonly three tables occupied at lunch time. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The North Korean authorities are trying to<br \/>\nstop the rumors from spreading further, but news has already traveled back to<br \/>\nmarket vendors in the North, having been disseminated by traders. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe news began to spread via wholesale<br \/>\nvendors who had received goods from trade workers on the day (of the 8th),\u201d the source explained. \u201cWithin a few days, it spread via wholesale vendors who collect<br \/>\ngoods from Sinuiju to sell in the markets across different provinces, and it<br \/>\nhas now become marketplace gossip.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The gossip centers heavily on concern about<br \/>\na \u201clooming purge,\u201d as most restaurant workers are children of cadres.<br \/>\nSome have commended the manager who led the escape saying it was a \u201csmart<br \/>\nchoice.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Following international sanctions against<br \/>\nthe North, Pyongyang Koryo Restaurant, Arirang, and Songdowon among others have<br \/>\nmanaged to keep their businesses relatively stable, while Sinuiju Restaurant<br \/>\nwas recently shut down due to bad performance, added the source.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the group defection of 13 of its overseas restaurant workers to South Korea, Pyongyang has scrambled to tighten the noose around its other workers, claiming that the mass defection was merely a ploy by South Korean intelligence and warning&nbsp;them against establishing contact with any South Koreans, Daily NK has learned. \u201cRumors about the group\u2019s [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":122,"featured_media":32526,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[645],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-32524","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.7 (Yoast SEO v28.6) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>N.
