Cargo truck traffic between China’s Dandong and North Korea’s Sinuiju has surged in mid-2026, with dozens of trucks lining up daily at the border crossing as North Korea China trade expands following last month’s summit between the two countries’ leaders.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily NK captured an image in late June of dozens of cargo trucks waiting outside customs in Dandong, a Chinese border city in Liaoning province across the Yalu River from Sinuiju, the capital of North Korea’s North Pyongan province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trucks hauling 40-foot containers queued to enter the customs checkpoint, while others that had already cleared inspection lined up to cross into Sinuiju.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scale of the convoy signals a substantial volume of goods moving between the two countries, a source told Daily NK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the exact contents of the containers could not be confirmed, the source said much of the Chinese cargo entering North Korea likely consists of construction materials such as cement and tiles<\/a>, along with medical equipment, electronics, clothing and other goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korea’s nationwide construction drive<\/a>, which includes new housing and factories, has driven up demand for building materials, the source said. Hospital modernization projects and renovations of service facilities have similarly increased the need for medical equipment and consumer goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truck traffic picking up pace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cargo trucks are crossing from Dandong into Sinuiju more frequently than before, and the convoys are growing larger, the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At times, more than 100 trucks carrying large containers enter Sinuiju in a single day,” the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surge in truck traffic reflects the economic cooperation push formalized during last month’s summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping<\/a>. Xi traveled to Pyongyang on June 8, his first visit to North Korea in seven years, where the two leaders pledged to expand cooperation in trade, agriculture and other sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korea China trade has climbed steadily<\/a> since the start of the year. Trade between the two countries totaled 8.71 billion yuan (about $1.28 billion) in the first five months of 2026, up 17.6% from the same period last year, according to data from China’s General Administration of Customs, the government agency that compiles Chinese trade statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China’s exports to North Korea rose 8.8% to 6.72 billion yuan (about $991 million), while its imports from North Korea jumped 62.4% to 1.99 billion yuan (about $294 million), the data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit appears to have eased customs procedures<\/a> between the two countries or prompted North Korean state agencies and trading companies to expand dealings with Chinese counterparts<\/a>, according to the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether the jump in cross-border shipments proves temporary or becomes a lasting trend remains to be seen. Still, the lines of cargo trucks outside Dandong customs point to a clear uptick in North Korea China trade at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
