Scam<\/span>mers in North Korea are <\/span>dyeing the fur of ordinary <\/span>livestock black and selling the <\/span>animals as premium dark-furred <\/span>breeds, exploiting a <\/span>widespread belief that black <\/span>animals offer superior health<\/a> <\/span>benefits ahead of the hottest <\/span>period of the summer<\/a> calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In North Korea, <\/span>the three hottest periods of <\/span>the summer, known as the <\/span>“sambok” days, are traditionally <\/span>observed by eating restorative meat <\/span>dishes to help the body cope <\/span>with summer heat<\/a>. The practice, <\/span>called “bokdalim,” involves boiling <\/span>meat into soups or stews and <\/span>has long been a fixture of <\/span>the summer calendar on the <\/span>Korean peninsula<\/a>. In recent <\/span>years, a growing belief has <\/span>taken hold that dark-furred <\/span>animals, including black goats, <\/span>black pigs, and black dogs<\/a>, <\/span>carry greater nutritional <\/span>value and stamina-restoring <\/span>properties than their lighter-coated <\/span>counterparts, driving<\/a> up prices<\/a> for <\/span>those animals in North Korean <\/span>markets<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A Daily NK source in South <\/span>Pyongan province said that demand <\/span>for black goats, black pigs, <\/span>and black dogs has been climbing <\/span>across multiple cities in the <\/span>province as the sambok period <\/span>approaches. “There are traders<\/a> who <\/span>dye ordinary goats, pigs, and dogs <\/span>black with hair<\/a> dye and sell <\/span>them,” the source said. “People are <\/span>now saying that you have to <\/span>check whether even livestock are <\/span>real or fake.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The source said dog meat<\/a> restaurants<\/a> <\/span>and other establishments preparing for <\/span>the sambok season have been <\/span>purchasing livestock from traders <\/span>ahead of the peak period. It<\/a> is <\/span>during these transactions that <\/span>fraudulent sellers have been <\/span>operating, offering black-furred <\/span>animals at prices slightly below <\/span>market<\/a> rate before disappearing <\/span>once the deception is <\/span>discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The fraud<\/a> is not always <\/span>apparent at the point of sale. Dye <\/span>applied to fur can hold its color <\/span>until the animal is washed or the <\/span>coat is examined closely, and <\/span>in some cases, lighter fur <\/span>begins to show through only after <\/span>time has passed. A restaurant <\/span>operator in Anju city purchased <\/span>three black goats on June 3 at a <\/span>below-market price<\/a>, only to discover <\/span>the animals had been dyed when <\/span>white fur began to grow back <\/span>through the dye after some <\/span>time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When the restaurant operator <\/span>shared the experience with <\/span>others, reactions ranged from <\/span>surprise to weary resignation. “I <\/span>had heard rumors like that a <\/span>few years ago, but didn’t think <\/span>it was actually happening,” <\/span>one person said. Another <\/span>remarked, “When life is this hard, <\/span>people will think of anything.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The source said the price <\/span>gap between standard and <\/span>dark-furred livestock has widened as <\/span>demand has grown, creating a <\/span>financial incentive for fraud. <\/span>“Before, not that many people were <\/span>specifically looking for black goats or <\/span>black pigs, but now the perception <\/span>that they’re a better health <\/span>food<\/a> has spread and the price <\/span>difference is quite significant. That’s <\/span>why some people go as far as <\/span>dyeing them.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some traders <\/span>exploit the fact that it is <\/span>difficult to detect dyed fur before <\/span>slaughter, selling the animals at <\/span>inflated prices and then cutting <\/span>off contact or relocating to <\/span>another area when problems emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Word of the scam has <\/span>spread among market traders and <\/span>restaurant operators, with some <\/span>now advising buyers to <\/span>inspect areas where dye is less <\/span>likely to have penetrated, <\/span>such as around the mouth, <\/span>inside the ears, and on the <\/span>belly. Others have begun <\/span>testing animals by applying <\/span>water<\/a> at the point of <\/span>purchase to see whether color runs <\/span>from the coat.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The source <\/span>said the problem is likely <\/span>to worsen before the sambok <\/span>season ends. “Demand for black <\/span>livestock will only keep <\/span>rising as the hottest days get <\/span>closer. People are already wondering <\/span>what other surprising schemes <\/span>might appear.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ordinary <\/span>North Korean people who <\/span>purchase cooked meat at markets or <\/span>eat at restaurants may <\/span>also be at risk, as they <\/span>have no way to verify the <\/span>origin of the meat in dishes <\/span>they buy. Concerns are <\/span>mounting that sellers may pass off <\/span>meat from ordinary animals <\/span>as black livestock and <\/span>charge accordingly during the <\/span>period of peak demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
