It<\/a> is sadly ironic that North Korea\u2019s
\nappalling human rights<\/a> record is essentially a direct outcome of the North
\nKorean system<\/a>. Kim Jong Un<\/a> enforces a cult of personality to sustain a system
\nof oppression founded upon the idea of a sole leader, just as his forefathers
\ndid, while flagrant violations of human rights continue unabated. Far from the
\nideals of an \u2018earthly paradise\u2019, it would not be an understatement to instead
\ndescribe North Korea as a human rights hell on Earth. <\/p>\n

Reports from defectors<\/a> confirm ongoing blatant
\nviolations of the rights of society\u2019s most vulnerable individuals, including
\nwomen<\/a>, children<\/a>, the elderly, and the disabled<\/a>. The traditional North Korean
\nfamily<\/a> mentality tolerates a certain extent of oppression of women and
\nchildren, but the inability of disabled individuals and the elderly to work<\/a> is
\nused to openly disqualify them as \u2018people\u2019.<\/span> <\/p>\n

According to the North Korean Human Rights
\nWhite Paper released in 2015 by the North Korean Database, the right to life,
\neducation<\/a>, and the dignity and liberty of the individual are just some of the
\nfundamental human rights that are being systematically violated in North Korea.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Women within North Korea typically suffer
\ndisproportionately due to their vulnerability, enduring gender-based violence<\/a>
\nsuch as rape, molestation, and sexual harassment. In labor<\/a> camps, political
\nprison camps<\/a>, and labor training camps, sexual violence is endemic.<\/span> <\/p>\n

The NKDB report<\/a> quotes a defector<\/a> from Ryanggang
\nProvince, who requested to remain anonymous, as saying, \u201cIn 2009, I entered a
\nlabor detention facility, where a party<\/a> secretary summoned me in the middle of
\nthe night and ordered me to take off my pants and lie down. When I protested,
\nhe forced himself on top of me and raped me. I was so ashamed afterwards that I
\nnever told anyone about it.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Daily NK, Park
\nYoung<\/a> Ho, a visiting professor at Gangwon University<\/a>, explained that within
\nNorth Korea\u2019s repressive environment, the human rights of women are virtually
\nignored. North Korea\u2019s dysfunctional social structure ensures that incidents
\nsuch as these not only remain unresolved, rather, they are becoming more
\nfrequent.<\/span> <\/p>\n

The fundamental right to an education for
\nmany of the children of North Korea is also being violated. Although North
\nKorea boasts that the right to 12 years of \u2018compulsory and free education\u2019 is
\nenshrined within its laws, in reality the proportion of children who do not
\nhave access to education is alarming, due to poverty<\/a>, political issues
\nconcerning family members, the guilt-by-association system, and many other
\nreasons. As a result, many children are forced to enter the workforce early or
\nbegin working in the markets<\/a> from a very young age.<\/span> <\/p>\n

According to NKDB, the number of children
\nattending kindergarten and nursery<\/a> schools<\/a> fell by 60% following the great
\nfamine of the 1990s, while attendance at elementary, middle, and high schools
\nfell by 40%.<\/span> <\/p>\n

A defector from Jagang<\/a> Province who
\nprovided a testimony to NKDB stated that, \u201cWhen my father<\/a> was charged with ‘revolting with words’ [anti-state remarks], our entire family was sent to a political prison
\ncamp, and although I was of school age I was unable to attend. Because we were
\npoor, I had no choice but to go to the mountains and survive on tree bark and
\nroots. It was, of course, impossible for me to study<\/a>.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

Although an event has not been held in
\nrecent years, in the past, North Korea mobilized approximately 100,000 people
\nin preparation for the mass propaganda<\/a> performance<\/a> Arirang. For at least ten
\nmonths for every event, hundreds of children and teenagers were required to
\npractice for more than ten hours per day. The excessive mobilization<\/a> of minors<\/a>
\nby the North Korean authorities for the performance of Arirang has been
\nhighlighted by international human rights organizations as a clear example of
\nchild abuse<\/a> for which the regime must be held accountable.<\/span> <\/p>\n

The elderly of North Korea are also
\nsuffering, as their fundamental rights to not only food<\/a>, but also basic welfare<\/a>
\nremain unfulfilled. According to NKDB, although violations of the right to food
\nfor the elderly are gradually receding, elderly people are continuing to starve
\nto death even after 2010.<\/span> <\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s senior citizen welfare system
\ncollapsed in the 1990s. As a result, many are forced to earn their livelihood
\nby working in the markets long after their retirement, as the regime does not
\ndistribute welfare provisions of any kind.<\/span> <\/p>\n

The disabled of North Korea are also
\nseverely abused and deprived of their fundamental right to human dignity. In
\nNorth Korea, where only those who are able to work are recognized as citizens,
\nthe disabled are subject to forcible deportation or detention.<\/span> <\/p>\n

A defector from Ryanggang Province told
\nDaily NK, \u201cIn Ryanggang Province there was a \u2018dwarf village\u2019, where those with
\nstunted growth were interned and forced to live in isolation with no outside
\ncontact. The regime rationalized this by claiming that those with disabilities
\nmay give birth to disabled children, so isolated was justified.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

The source went on to explain that when
\nchildren with disabilities are born in hospitals<\/a>, they are frequently neglected
\nin the hope that they will die. \u201cAs North Korea does not recognize the sanctity
\nof life, this sort of cruelty is a frequent occurrence,\u201d the source said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kim Su Am, former director of the
\nUnification<\/a> Research Center, noted that although North Korea has a legal system
\nand laws pertaining to the socially vulnerable, these are for propaganda
\npurposes only and are not upheld. The elite and their lifestyles are
\nprioritized above all else, creating a massive discrepancy between what the
\nlaws stipulate and the horrifying reality.<\/span> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
