Image: Daily NK<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We have gotten confirmation that Kim Jong<br \/>\nUn\u2019s birthday has been marked as a normal weekday and not as a national holiday<br \/>\non North Korea\u2019s official 2016 calendar. There was a lot of speculation that<br \/>\nhis birthday would be designated a national holiday this year since it has been<br \/>\na full five years since his ascendancy to power, but these expectations did not<br \/>\ncome to fruition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Daily NK has acquired a copy of the 2016<br \/>\ncalendar, in which Kim Il<br \/>\nSung\u2019s birthday, Kim Jong Il\u2019s birthday, Chuseok, and New Years are all<br \/>\nhighlighted in red to indicate their status as official national holidays. January<br \/>\n8th, however, remains in black print, with no special markings or reference to<br \/>\nadvertise Kim Jong Un\u2019s birthday.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the month of February, \u201cWe will go to<br \/>\nMount Baekdu\u201d is written in calligraphy. Accompanying this is another<br \/>\npropaganda phrase \u201cTo Mount Baektu, Mount Baektu, the home of my heart .\u201d<br \/>\nIncidentally, both phrases are also the titles of oft-performed songs in North<br \/>\nKorea. The inclusion of this phrase is meant to legitimize Kim Jong Un\u2019s<br \/>\nauthority as the rightful heir to the Kim Dynasty. &nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the past when Kim Il Sung rose to power,<br \/>\nthe calendar marked his birthday (April 15th) with the expression \u2018The Future<br \/>\nof Chosun (North Korea).\u2019 When Kim Jong Il inherited the throne, his birthday (February 16th)<br \/>\nwas marked with the phrase, \u2018The Spring of Humanity.\u2019\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">An inside source from North Pyongan<br \/>\nProvince said, \u201cAccording to North Korean propaganda, the birthdays of Kim Jong<br \/>\nIl and Kim Il Sung serve as the start of history and the launching pad for the<br \/>\nfuture. This is carefully crafted propaganda to reinforce the idolization of<br \/>\nthe leaders. Although January 8th is not yet marked as a holiday at this point,<br \/>\nhistory suggests that there will be a shift of emphasis away from February and<br \/>\nMarch and towards January in the future.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She added, \u201cIf we break down the calendar<br \/>\nby its twelve constituent months, we can see that February and April have three<br \/>\nholidays apiece, while January only has Solar New Year\u2019s. However, Solar New<br \/>\nYear\u2019s is typically used as a day to prepare manure to support rural villages,<br \/>\nso it\u2019s not even really fair to say that counts as a day of relaxation. The<br \/>\nmonth of Kim Jong Un\u2019s birthday, then, does not have a single true holiday.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When asked about the reasons Kim Jong Un\u2019s<br \/>\nbirthday is not yet considered a holiday, the source said, \u201cI think this is a<br \/>\nreflection of his style. Kim Jong Un has a very particular personality. He<br \/>\nwants to use propaganda to differentiate himself from his father. It seems as<br \/>\nif he is purposefully trying to use propaganda not only to support idolization,<br \/>\nbut also to stimulate the people\u2019s loyalty by showing his \u2018love\u2019 for them.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Just like last year\u2019s calendar, Kim Jong<br \/>\nUn\u2019s appointment as Chairman of the National Defense Commission (4.13) and as<br \/>\nFirst Secretary of the Workers&#8217; Party (4.11) are not marked as national holidays. Instead, these occasions are inserted as simple explanations beneath<br \/>\nthe calendar.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The day when \u201cthe great leader Comrade Kim<br \/>\nJong Il started work at the Central Committee of the Worker\u2019s Party of Korea,\u201d<br \/>\ndesignated as a public holiday in 2015, falls on a Sunday this year, meaning<br \/>\nthat is is not possible to confirm that this remains a holiday. This ambiguity also applies to Labor day, celebrated on May 1st.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mother\u2019s Day (November 16th) is still plainly marked as a holiday as are Solar New Year\u2019s Day (1.1), Lunar New<br \/>\nYear\u2019s Day (2.8), Chuseok (9.15), and Chungmyung Day (4.4).<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When all the Sundays and holidays on the<br \/>\n2016 calendar are tallied up, the total is 67 days.
