{"id":31492,"date":"2015-09-08T16:39:53","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T07:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.dailynk.com\/en\/?p=31492"},"modified":"2020-01-17T08:29:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T23:29:41","slug":"north-koreans-likely-shocked-by-pr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/north-koreans-likely-shocked-by-pr\/","title":{"rendered":"North Koreans likely &#8216;shocked&#8217; by prominence of Park Geun Hye during celebrations in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Park Geun Hye\u2019s recent visit to China to<br \/>\nattend 70th anniversary celebrations marking the end of WWII has been the subject of much attention and analysis, a fair amount of which speculated that the special<br \/>\ntreatment bestowed on the South Korean leader by Beijing portends stronger bilateral<br \/>\nties between the two nations going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lee Tae Hwan, head of the Chinese research<br \/>\ncenter at Sejong Institute, said that South Korea and China\u2019s joint criticism<br \/>\nof North Korea\u2019s aggravations on the Korean Peninsula sends a strong message to<br \/>\nthe North that it should cease and prevent further provocations.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis comes ahead of the upcoming 70th<br \/>\nanniversary of the founding of the Workers\u2019 Party in October, when many expect<br \/>\nthe North to launch a missile or execute another show of strength. Remarks coming out of the China-South Korea meeting will undoubtedly place major&nbsp;pressure on the<br \/>\nNorth,\u201d he explained.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Cho Bong Hyun, a senior researcher from IBK<br \/>\nEconomic Research Institute, surmised that North Korea \u201cmust feel cornered,\u201d after China backed South Korea&#8217;s stance that further provocations by North Korea on the Korean Peninsula are &#8220;unacceptable.&#8221;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cAs a nation that was trying to recover its<br \/>\n\u2018blood-ally\u2019 relationship with China, North Korea probably feels left out in<br \/>\nthe cold as China is trying to press ahead with a trilateral summit meeting<br \/>\namong South Korea, China, and Japan,\u201d Cho asserted.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The marked absence of commentary regarding North Korea&#8217;s nuclear development on China&#8217;s part, however, divided opinions on the implications for the recent Sino-South Korea interactions. The less skeptical of those watching the issue assert<br \/>\nthat China\u2019s overt criticism of North Korea\u2019s provocation is a clear indication<br \/>\nof its stance and proof positive of consensus with South Korea on the nuclear issue as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Cho does urge caution and hasty conclusions<br \/>\nfrom one meeting, noting that \u201cit\u2019s too much to expect denuclearization of<br \/>\nNorth Korea through a single discussion between China and South Korea.\u201d Now, he<br \/>\nadded, \u201cit is imperative to devise strategies and continuously cooperate with<br \/>\nChina in order to realize a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Park\u2019s close proximity to Xi Jinping throughout<br \/>\nthe military parade and on the balcony overlooking the event also garnered significant attention among pundits and casual watchers alike. Many asserted that the seating demonstrated to the world that<br \/>\nChina-South Korea relations are stronger than ever before and mused about the<br \/>\ndegree of shock the North Korean regime would be feeling after witnessing the<br \/>\nseating arrangement.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Among the experts examining the issue was Seo Jae Pyung, office director for the<br \/>\nCommittee for the Democratization of North Korea, who said, \u201cNorth Korean<br \/>\ncitizens are likely wondering why Kim Jong Un has yet to visit China&#8211;a stark<br \/>\ncontrast from the eras of his father and grandfather, during both of which strong diplomatic ties with China featured prominently. Regardless of whether<br \/>\nKim Jong Un was uninvited or rejected the invitation, North Korean citizens will<br \/>\nthink that Sino-North Korean ties have frayed.\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cKim Il Sung stood right next to Chinese<br \/>\nhead of state but now we see Park Geun Hye in that position.
