{"id":30253,"date":"2015-03-20T15:56:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T06:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.dailynk.com\/en\/?p=30253"},"modified":"2023-08-23T21:03:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T12:03:26","slug":"to-nk-how-can-a-9-year-old-be-a-po","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/to-nk-how-can-a-9-year-old-be-a-po\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;To NK: How Can a 9 Year Old Be a Political Prisoner?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"line-height: 20px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On March 17th, amid the 28th session of the<br \/>\nUN Human Rights Council, a special event was held to screen the recently<br \/>\nproduced short film, \u201cAnswer Me,\u201d wherein North Korean defectors, personally<br \/>\naffected by the political prison camp system [kwanliso] in North Korea, demand that the<br \/>\nauthorities take responsibility to remove the truths behind the political prison camps from obscurity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The film opens with Kim Dong Nam, who does<br \/>\nnot know the whereabouts of his son who was taken away by State Security<br \/>\nDepartment agents, followed by Kim Young Hee, who demands to know the whereabouts<br \/>\nand condition of her brother who is currently being held in a political prison<br \/>\ncamp in North Korea. Kang Cheol Hwan and Jung Gwang Il, both kwanliso victims, demand transparency from the North about what\u2019s happening behind the<br \/>\nwalls of these inhumane facilities.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">These brave individuals call on the<br \/>\nNorth Korean authorities to cease their systematic inhumane oppression of human<br \/>\nrights, their voices shaking yet resolute as they reopen wounds to talk<br \/>\nabout these painful experiences and losing family members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kang asks, \u201cHow can a nine-year-old<br \/>\nchild be a political prisoner?\u201d while Jeong points out, \u201cWhy was I<br \/>\ntortured for 10 months? It was so horrible I made a false confession,\u201d his eyes<br \/>\nbrimming with tears.
