The song is well known in the South for reflecting the sentiments<br \/>\nof young men facing conscription. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Recruitment for high school graduates is<br \/>\nunderway at the moment,&#8221; a source from North Pyongan Province told Daily<br \/>\nNK on Tuesday. &#8220;Each year in March, villages go through a period of<br \/>\nsending people off, and scores of friends and draftees sing &#8216;Letter from a<br \/>\nPrivate&#8217; together.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He added that until last year, those singing the song were largely unaware of its southern origin, with even teachers, anxious for the departing students, frequently chiming in. \u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">These days, however, draftees are not only aware of the fact that<br \/>\nit&#8217;s from the South, but they also talk about <\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">Joint Security Area&#8217; [a popular South Korean film set in the truce village at Panmunjeom that features the song],&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Draftees deemed fit for duty after undergoing medical<br \/>\nexaminations and haircuts at the municipal military mobilization<br \/>\nunit are given ten days to stay at home before being shipped off to the<br \/>\nprovincial unit, according to the source. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The draftees<br \/>\nfeel embarrassed about showing their military hair cuts and try to cover them<br \/>\nup by wearing hats. Singing this song provides them with some comfort, helping to soothe the sadness that comes with leaving family and friends,&#8221; he asserted.<br style=\"mso-special-character:line-break\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The sound of these soon-to-be soldiers<br \/>\nplaying the guitar and singing the lyrics&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">my shortened hair, at first looked funny; my reflection in the mirror stiffens, along with my heart<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> is audible throughout the<br \/>\nvillage. &#8220;At these sounds reverberating throughout the night sky, parents<br \/>\ncry, and elderly members of the village wish them the best, hoping they will<br \/>\nnot starve,&#8221; he said.<br style=\"mso-special-character:line-break\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The source explained these starvation concerns stem from the fact that soldiers are often at higher risk for malnutrition because unlike ordinary residents, who are able to do business at<br \/>\nthe <i>jangmandang<\/i>, they are forbidden from engaging in individual economic activities.&nbsp;<\/span>With<br \/>\nlimited access to state provisions, which generally consist of little more than<br \/>\nrice and salt, soldiers often languish from a lack of protein and vitamins available<br \/>\nin other side dishes, suffering from chronic malnutrition and&#8211;in extreme<br \/>\ncases&#8211;starvation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">South Korean mothers cry when their sons are drafted because<br \/>\nthey know a protracted period will pass without seeing them. North Korean<br \/>\nmothers, however, cry when their sons (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?num=12995&amp;cataId=nk01500\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">or daughters<\/font><\/a>) are drafted because they know the<br \/>\nsuffering that awaits them, according to the source. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">South Korean songs are loved by North<br \/>\nKoreans because they give them a chance to express their feelings and emotions<br \/>\naway from being compelled to express their uniform loyalty to the<br \/>\n<i>Suryeong <\/i>[Kim Il Sung],&#8221; he said, speculating the popularity of the song to only increase with time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This assumption is bolstered by a population constantly employing new methods to evade state oppression. While singing foreign songs is banned in the North, he explained that residents are not overly concerned with the consequences, having devised an excuse for such a situation: &#8220;they thought the song was Chilbosan music.&#8221; This music is produced in the North for propaganda purposes in<br \/>\nthe South and reportedly employs techniques more relatable to those below the 38th parallel.<br
