This&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">address was an imitation of his grandfather Kim Il Sung<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\npropaganda and agitation. It is documented in North Korean records that Kim Il<br \/>\nSung, skilled at public speaking, enjoyed <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">verbal<br \/>\npolitics<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> from his early 20s. The history of North<br \/>\nKorea<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s address<br \/>\nbegan after the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s bell ringing ceremony in<br \/>\nPyongyang at midnight heading into &nbsp;January 1st, 1946, when Kim Il Sung<br \/>\ngave his speech, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Cry to the nation<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s people in greeting the new year<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">. After<br \/>\nthe late <\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">60s, until which internal political opponents<br \/>\nof the Workers<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\"> Party were eliminated, Kim Il Sung<br \/>\nbecame deified as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Suryeong<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\nand the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address quickly rose as a <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">lesson<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> to be strictly followed by all<br \/>\nresidents of North Korea.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, Kim Jong Il was different from his<br \/>\nfather, Kim Il Sung. He never personally delivered the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address. There were expectations for Kim Jong Il to deliver the<br \/>\naddress in place of his deceased father on January 1, 1995, &nbsp;but instead<br \/>\nhe suddenly opted for a military base onsite visit as his first official New<br \/>\nYear<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s activity. It was the <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Dabaksol<br \/>\nguard post<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> visit that was interpreted by North Koreans<br \/>\nas full-fledged action of Kim Jong Il<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s military-first<br \/>\npolitics. Rumors say he made excuses saying, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The New<br \/>\nYear<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address is only possible by the Great Leader<br \/>\n(Kim Il Sung), how could I dare to imitate him.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> During<br \/>\nthe Kim Jong Il era, the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address was<br \/>\nreplaced with a <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\nJoint Editorial<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> published by other party, military,<br \/>\nand political publications such as Rodong Sinmun, the North Korean People<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Army, and Minju Joseon. Among North Korean residents, word spread<br \/>\nwidely that <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">our General (Kim Jong Il) does not deliver the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address because he is not as<br \/>\neloquent as our Suryeong.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Interestingly enough, Kim Jong Eun also<br \/>\nmade a different choice than that of his father (Kim Jong Il). In truth, he was<br \/>\nengrossed in <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Kim Il Sung costume play<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> ever since his days as successor. He gained weight in order to look<br \/>\nlike Kim Il Sung, and took on the hairstyle and clothing that were popular in<br \/>\nPyongyang several decades ago. After Kim Jong Il died, he personally delivered<br \/>\nthe New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address instead of releasing in the form of the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Joint Editorial. North Korea<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s supreme<br \/>\nleader himself is the most effective method of propaganda and agitation: his<br \/>\nwords become the government<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s objectives and the places<br \/>\nhe visits become managed as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">revolutionary historical<br \/>\nsites<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">. People who have personally met the supreme<br \/>\nleader are referred to as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">receivers<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> and their consideration by and advancement in the Workers<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\"> Party is guaranteed. These factors would lead one to assume that North Korean media outlets<br \/>\nwould be very effective tools in fostering Kim Jong Eun&#8217;s emulation of Kim Il Sung.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address delivery on KCTV on Janaury 1st was cloaked in failure. It was said that Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\nauthority was showing a trend of stabilization after Jang Song Thaek<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s execution, but Kim Jong Eun appeared patently uneasy in the footage<br \/>\nreleased by North Korean media outlets.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address broadcast on KCTV was irrefutably edited. As the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address must be published by Rodong Sinmun, which promulgates the address to the entire nation by January 1st, it is common knowledge that<br \/>\nthe address must be prepared before the year end. It also appears that the<br \/>\ndelivery clip was filmed before the arrival of the new year. The clip was 28 minutes 50<br \/>\nseconds long, but an audience or facilitator does not come into view for even the<br \/>\nbriefest of moments. Despite the lack of an audience, incorporation of applause was seemingly deemed necessary, and so an applause sound effect was employed at intermittent spots throughout the address&#8211;in total, 39 times. Each time the applause is audible, the<br \/>\nscreen jumps to a fixed image of the Chosun Workers<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\"> Party<br \/>\nCentral Committee building. The awkward sound of applause is held for numerous seconds<br \/>\nover a still image&#8211;not video. The applause sound effect makes up approximately<br \/>\na total of 4 minutes and 30 seconds of the footage; therefore, nearly 1\/7th of the total New<br \/>\nYear<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address was taken up by the applause sound<br \/>\neffect and a picture of the&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chosun Workers<\/span>\u2019&nbsp;<span lang=\"EN-US\">Party Central Committee building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kim Jong Eun stepped onto the podium<br \/>\nholding files that looked like a script, and several times, appeared to be<br \/>\nreading them. While following his gaze, one can assume that there are approximately two<br \/>\nteleprompters located in front of the camera. Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s pronunciation is not accurate and he speaks far too quickly. After<br \/>\nthe ten minute mark, his voice slowly begins to crack. At times there there is a sense that he is struggling with his breathing&#8211; he appears to have<br \/>\ndifficulty controlling his breath even while merely reading from the<br \/>\nteleprompter.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Moreover, signs of four so-called NGs, video edits<br \/>\ndue to mistakes on Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s part, are<br \/>\ndiscernible. The leader&#8217;s<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;voice can be heard,<br \/>\n&nbsp;but the visual image is of the&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chosun Workers<\/span>\u2019&nbsp;<span lang=\"EN-US\">Party Central Committee building<\/span>,<br \/>\nnot the young leader. The image employed during the applause sound effect<br \/>\nalso appears four times while Kim Jong Eun&#8217;s speech delivery carries on without any pause.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The footage reveals Kim Jong Eun to be visibly nervous from beginning<br \/>\nto end. He seems unable to be still for even a single moment. The<br \/>\nmost embarrassing instant is when he grips the podium with both hands and pushes<br \/>\nout his rear end. The only way to describe this is to say that he <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">sways.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> Although the lower half of his body<br \/>\nfrom his waist down is hidden<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;by<br \/>\nthe podium, his hands, shoulders, and gaze lean forward then push back&#8211; and at<br \/>\nsome moments rock from left to right. Whether due to his smoking or obesity,<br \/>\nKim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s lower half keeps trembling. The camera<br \/>\nthat must follow Kim Jong Il<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s movements also shakes with him.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A message is not just contained in the<br \/>\nsounds coming from someone<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s mouth. It is said that<br \/>\neven before the <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">meaning<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> of<br \/>\nthose sounds are even interpreted, the eye has already picked up on the<br \/>\nnonverbal messages. UCLA psychology professor Albert Mehrabian said that the<br \/>\nfactors affecting the recipient of a message take place in the order of visual<br \/>\n(55%), auditory (38%), &nbsp;then content (7%). Peter Desbergy. a psychology<br \/>\nprofessor at California State University, described anxiety during speeches as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">stage phobia<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> and defined it as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">a dread believing that one<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s speech will be<br \/>\nevaluated negatively.<\/span>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When referencing theories of relevant<br \/>\nspecialists, the Kim Jong Eun in the video clip is still too unseasoned. Asking<br \/>\nto call forth Kim Il Sung<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s image based on Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s performance would really be pushing it.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When read, Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s address is not much different from that of last year. Last year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s address also laid<br \/>\nout over exaggerations of successes and the same old requests of the party,<br \/>\nmilitary, science, economy, society, and South Korea and international<br \/>\nrelations. In truth, this sort of fossilized New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\nJoint Editorial and New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address is one of the<br \/>\nmany representative aspects of old North Korea. Furthermore, when Kim Jong Eun, the main<br \/>\ncharacter of the performance, gives a show as lacking as this one, it is<br \/>\nworrisome that an excessive interpretation of the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address could instead ensnare us in a <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">trap<br \/>\nof misjudgment.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> Many North Korea specialists have<br \/>\nstarted to hold suspicions of doubt on questions such as whether <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">North Korea has the will to maintain the New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> and <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">even<br \/>\nif they had the will, whether they have the actually abilities to accomplish<br \/>\nthem.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> This means North Korea<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\nNew Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s Address lacks the substantial implications<br \/>\nand logical completeness of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\nIf there are still readers immersed in interpretation of the words and phrases<br \/>\nof North Korea<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s New Year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\naddress, I would like to recommend that you first take a look at the video clip<br \/>\nof Kim Jong Eun<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s delivery of the speech. The visual<br \/>\ncues given by Kim Jong Eun himself are significant and frequent. Kim Jong Eun personally<br \/>\ndisplays the heart of a North Korean regime that wishes go back in time to<br \/>\nthirty years ago but cannot do so.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Particularly, looking at the ending scene when Kim Jong Eun says, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">I hope that all families in the country find happiness as they greet<br \/>\nthe hopeful new year of 2015,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> and bows his head, we witness a<br \/>\nparticularly unusual moment that would not have taken place in Kim Jong Il<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s era.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On January 1st, 2015, North Korean leader Kim Jung Eun delivered his third New Year\u2019s Address.
