The books are only lent to those whose<br \/>\nidentities can be verified and the main clientele&#8211;university students&#8211;rent<br \/>\nout the books for 3,000 KPW an hour, according to a local source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">A black market for foreign novels has long<br \/>\nexisted in the markets, but it<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s only recently that<br \/>\nwe have seen the emergence of <\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">subversive books,<\/span>\u2019\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> a source based in South Pyongan Province told the Daily NK on<br \/>\nFriday. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Most of them are from Japan and include<br \/>\ndetailed descriptions of espionage operations.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Most North Koreans refer to anti-state<br \/>\nbooks that are not endorsed by the government as <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">bad<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> books, she went on to explain. The majority of publications in the North are for propaganda<br \/>\npurposes; in the black market, globally renowned classics on politics and<br \/>\neconomics, unavailable in libraries, are circulated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The people who first established a black<br \/>\nmarket for books used to be mainly writers, journalists, and teachers, but now, they&#8217;re university students,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> the source explained. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Most books are translated and printed by students studying foreign<br \/>\nlanguages.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">These students<br \/>\nare largely the children of Party cadres, who use their parents<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\"> influence to get traders to bring in foreign literature. After procuring the titles, students make copies of these translations to sell on the black market using copying facilities located in public institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">All computers and printers in North Korea<br \/>\nmust be registered with the State Security Department [SSD]&#8211;a practice that<br \/>\nexists to prevent the distribution of any anti-state propaganda leaflets or<br \/>\nmaterials. &nbsp;The SSD controls factories and other Party organizations possessing any type of printing device. Photographers with access rights to copiers and printers for images are also under strict surveillance from law enforcement agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Because of this risk, the number of books<br \/>\ncirculated is small, also explaining why instead of selling them, a rental system has unfolded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In order to evade surveillance from the SSD, students use indistinct titles such as&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Daily Review<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;or those from North Korean novels on the covers. The original title is only known to the student who translated the book, which is why among most students they are referred to simply as&nbsp;<\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">Japanese books,<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;the source said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;&#8216;Japanese books&#8217; are rented out for about<br \/>\n3,000 KPW an hour,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> the source said. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">In the market, regular North Korean books charge 1,000 KPW &nbsp;per day and foreign classics are 3,000 KPW,&#8221; noting the significantly higher asking price of books published overseas over those printed locally.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">College students are used to the culture<br \/>\nof watching over each other, so they enjoy detective stories to try to<br \/>\nunderstand the social fabric of the North&#8211; where you can&#8217;t even trust your own<br \/>\nfriends,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> she elaborated. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">A lot of<br \/>\nthe &#8216;Japanese novels&#8217; are crime stories investigating cases involving serial<br \/>\nkillers.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Elements of the works resonate with most who enjoy reading them, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Looking at the rocky relationship between<br \/>\nindividuals and power, and having to live through complicated times with wisdom<br \/>\nand hidden solutions feels so real,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> the source said, citing opinions of many students.&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">It<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s like it shows how you have to struggle<br \/>\nto survive in a capitalist society, so it<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\ninteresting,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> others have said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In this case, personal connections trump money for reading privileges, &#8220;&#8216;<span lang=\"EN-US\">Japanese novels&#8217; that deal with social relations and<br \/>\nissues of morality are considered provocative, so it<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s<br \/>\nmore about being able to verify who the borrower is than whether they have<br \/>\nmoney to pay,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> she concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A series of books considered \u201csubversive\u201d in North Korea have recently been circulating in black markets, with people renting them out at a fixed price, the Daily NK has learned.
