{"id":29071,"date":"2014-11-14T18:02:41","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T09:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.dailynk.com\/en\/?p=29071"},"modified":"2020-01-17T09:27:07","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T00:27:07","slug":"brokers-turn-on-families-under-ssd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/brokers-turn-on-families-under-ssd\/","title":{"rendered":"Brokers Turn on Families under SSD Pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The SSD unit in North Hamkyung Province is using information obtained from remittance brokers to track down households with foreign mobile phones as the latest measure to isolate the cross-border flow of information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIn Hoeryong City, seven families were<br \/>\ndiscovered with phones obtained from brokers; during the investigation,<br \/>\nhousehold members are divided and undergo separate interrogations after which they are sent to labor-training camps,\u201d a source in North Hamkyung Province told<br \/>\nDaily NK on November 13th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Age and sex are no basis for leniency or exemption from punishment, \u201cOne of those sent to the labor training camp was a women in her<br \/>\n60s,\u201d she said. \u201cHer son in South Korea asked a broker to buy a phone and give<br \/>\nit to his mother, but she got caught before she could even try to use it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With increased directives to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?cataId=nk01500&amp;num=12545\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">stamp out illegal<br \/>\nphone<\/font><\/a> calls in border regions, including the installation of new German-manufactured radio wave detectors, the number of residents being caught in the wake is significant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As previously reported by the Daily NK on<br \/>\nNovember 12th, areas of Yangkang Province bordering China have been labeled<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?num=12553&amp;cataId=nk01500\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">\u201cdanger zones,\u201d<\/font><\/a> and security efforts to crackdown on outside calls, defections,<br \/>\nand remittance flows have seen a recent increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the source, the incident involving the seven families originates with two residents of&nbsp;Hoeryong&nbsp;City, who after undergoing interrogations by security agents suspicious of their involvement with illegal<br \/>\nremittance flows from South to North, confessed to possessing Chinese mobile phones. Under duress, they also revealed the households to which they had provided similar devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The families were targeted in the<br \/>\ninvestigation&#8211;and given no opportunity to refute the allegations because of the brokers&#8217; testimony&#8211;were immediately arrested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The provincial unit of the SSD has pieced together that residents stop using their phones when crackdowns begin, so<br \/>\ninstead, they use smugglers and brokers to expose and arrest residents who are in possession of mobile<br \/>\nphones from outside of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This culmination of factors has made it even more difficult for residents to make international phones calls, \u201cAt present, if you make a phone call you don\u2019t know when you\u2019re going to get caught, so it\u2019s too dangerous,\u201d the<br \/>\nsource pointed out. &#8220;If you&#8217;re unlucky, you could take the fall for<br \/>\neverything smugglers or brokers have done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCrackdowns on anyone making illegal phone<br \/>\ncalls in border areas, helping others do it, involvement in remittances, or<br \/>\nanything else the SSD deems illegal are on the rise again,\u201d she said, adding that most are scrambling to come up with new methods to avoid detection and develop more efficient methods of keeping such activities sufficiently hidden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;The SSD is a place where you end up<br \/>\nhaving \u2018committed&#8217; crimes that in actuality you didn\u2019t; there&#8217;s never a way of<br \/>\nnot admitting to things,\u201d she explained. \u201cBecause of the smugglers and<br \/>\nbrokers, anyone who isn\u2019t caught is going to be under strict surveillance, and<br \/>\nanyone who is caught is going to end up suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SSD unit in North Hamkyung Province is using information obtained from remittance brokers to track down households with foreign mobile phones as the latest measure to isolate the cross-border flow of information. \u201cIn Hoeryong City, seven families were discovered with phones obtained from brokers; during the investigation, household members are divided and undergo separate [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":145,"featured_media":29073,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"wikipediapreview_detectlinks":true,"footnotes":""},"categories":[645],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-29071","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.7 (Yoast SEO v27.9) -
