{"id":28897,"date":"2014-10-31T18:09:44","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T09:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.dailynk.com\/en\/?p=28897"},"modified":"2020-01-17T09:27:11","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T00:27:11","slug":"smuggled-cabbage-for-kimchi-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/smuggled-cabbage-for-kimchi-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Smuggled Cabbage for Kimchi Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In many regions of North Korea, a lack of<br \/>\nfertilizer and the spring drought have resulted in a poor vegetable crop, making&nbsp;<i>kimjang<\/i>, the preparation of <i>kimchi <\/i>[a traditional fermented Korean side dish]&nbsp;for the winter, extremely<br \/>\ndifficult for residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe drought this year was so bad and the cabbage<br \/>\nis infested with worms; we\u2019ve got a lot of radishes, but not much else,\u201d a source in Yangkang Province reported to the Daily NK on October 30th.<br \/>\n\u201cAs <i>kimjang<\/i>&nbsp;season approaches, people are seriously worried about what they\u2019re<br \/>\ngoing to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cSome residents, in collusion with military<br \/>\nofficers and border guards, are bringing in cabbage and other vegetables from<br \/>\nChina at night to deal with the issue,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the source, the state has<br \/>\nimposed strict rules on the harvesting of cabbage and other vegetables, citing<br \/>\nconcern over contracting possible contagious diseases carried by the rampant bug infestation of the crops. Plant and animal products coming in or going out<br \/>\nof the country are strictly forbidden as part of the quarantine efforts, so<br \/>\ncustoms officials and quarantine personnel are currently playing crucial roles in<br \/>\nsmuggling these products into North Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe crops can live without fertilizer, but<br \/>\nwithout water, fertilizer is pretty pointless for growing vegetables,\u201d the source elaborated on the dismal harvest. \u201cBecause of the drought,<br \/>\n&nbsp;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?num=12436&amp;cataId=nk01500\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">power supply decreased<\/font><\/a> and so the water pumps are hopeless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This being the situation, the price of<br \/>\nvegetables at the market is up to the whims of the seller. \u201cA kilogram of<br \/>\nradishes is 700 KPW [0.09 USD], with a kilogram of cabbage going for<br \/>\n1,200-1,500 KPW [0.15-0.19 USD]; most refer to the exorbitant prices as<br \/>\nthe \u2018price of gold,\u2019\u201d he reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Last year, despite slight variances among regions, the average price of one kilogram of cabbage at the<br \/>\nbeginning of the winter season was 1,000 KPW [0.12 USD]; this year it\u2019s risen<br \/>\nby 200-500 KPW [0.02-0.06 USD].<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In order for a family of five to prepare<br \/>\nsufficient <i>kimchi<\/i> for the winter requires 500kg of cabbage and 100-200kg of<br \/>\nradishes&#8211;the cabbage alone costs up to 750,000 KPW [93 USD]. Add to that the<br \/>\nnecessary red pepper powder, garlic, and other seasonings and the price quickly<br \/>\nskyrockets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <i>kimchi<\/i> prepared during <i>kimjang<\/i> must<br \/>\nlast a family through the winter until the arrival of spring in the North. During<br \/>\nthe period of preparing the spicy dish, residents work together to help each other complete the task, and most take<br \/>\na short break from work as part of the preparations.
