The drop in supply is likely due to the drought in early spring and<br \/>\nlack of overall rainfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A Yangkang Province-based source told the<br \/>\nDaily NK on Monday, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The handouts began this month for<br \/>\nautumn potatoes.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> She said, however, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Last year, a six-month supply of rations was distributed for each<br \/>\nfamily member, but this year, the head of each household has received two<br \/>\nmonths<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\"> worth, while other members only received one<br \/>\nmonth<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s worth.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">For homemakers, one month<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s supply makes up for roughly 40 kg, while for householders, a<br \/>\ntwo-month supply is roughly 150 kg,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> the source<br \/>\nelaborated. With the lurch in quota, residents are already troubled about next<br \/>\nyear, she explained, as to North Koreans, potatoes are considered the second<br \/>\nmost important staple after rice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After fall potato harvest, residents go out<br \/>\nto dig for individual potatoes that may have gone undetected: usually, support<br \/>\ntroops, who are largely unfamiliar with farming, are mobilized for for<br \/>\nharvesting efforts and miss potato bulbs buried deep underground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, people have not even been able to<br \/>\nreap the yield they used to from this process, the source said, a signal that<br \/>\nthis year<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s harvest has dwindled significantly compared<br \/>\nto last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Last year, going out for a follow-up sweep<br \/>\nin the fields produced roughly 100 kg in a day, but this year, even after a<br \/>\nfull day of work, it<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s hard to gather 30 kg,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> the source explained. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Since the harvest is<br \/>\nnot very good, there aren<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">t many hidden in the ground<br \/>\neither, so few have managed to salvage missed potatoes.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The state potatoes are not sorted well, so<br \/>\nthere<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s a mixture of big and small potatoes&#8211; and even<br \/>\nsome rotten ones. This is why vendors sell them for a cheap price, because they<br \/>\nrequire a lot of work,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> she asserted. <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Some people have been going out of their way to buy state potatoes,<br \/>\nwhich are almost half the price of those sorted and sold by size.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Potatoes that have gone through this process<br \/>\nof categorizing by size and quality, sell for 1,200 KPW per kilogram at the<br \/>\nmarket, according to the local source. State potatoes go for about half that at<br \/>\n550 KPW, so they sell out almost as soon as they hit the market. This year, the<br \/>\nprice of potatoes in fall has increased by 300 KPW, up from its previous cost<br \/>\nof 900 KPW per kilogram. The source speculated that the substandard supply will only<br \/>\nadd to the probability of rising prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the source, some residents<br \/>\nhave said, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">It<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">s a relief they<br \/>\nat least gave us something,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> while others have<br \/>\ncommented on the 40 kg handout to homemakers, saying, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">even<br \/>\ngoing and working somewhere would yield that amount [40 kg].<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\"> She concluded, <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Getting something is always<br \/>\nbetter &nbsp;than nothing, so most do care about getting what rations they can.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fall potato rations are being handed out in North Korea\u2019s Yangkang Province, but the quota stands at less than half of last year\u2019s, the Daily NK has learned.
