A 10W panel goes for 80 RMB; a 30W sells for 240 RMB; a 50W version for<br \/>\n400 RMB; and a 100W model fetches 800 RMB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;\nmso-ascii-font-family:\" \ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"\ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-hansi-font-family:=\"\" \"\ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-bidi-font-family:\uad74\ub9bc;color:black;mso-font-kerning:0pt\"=\"\">According to<br \/>\nthe source, factors such as class and sector greatly influence solar panel<br \/>\nusage among North Korea&#8217;s residents. The 100W panel powers mills and individual businesses; the 50W is mainly<br \/>\nfor <i>donju<\/i> [the new affluent middle class], and the 30W serves average<br \/>\nresidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;\nmso-ascii-font-family:\" \ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"\ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-hansi-font-family:=\"\" \"\ub9d1\uc740=\"\" \uace0\ub515\";mso-bidi-font-family:\uad74\ub9bc;color:black;mso-font-kerning:0pt\"=\"\">With the<br \/>\npanels, people are even able to charge their wet cell [135A] and dry cell [28A,<br \/>\n55A] car batteries, as well as motorbike batteries [12A]. Car and motorbike<br \/>\nbatteries have long been essential items utilized by residents to charge items within their homes. The dry cell batteries have been introduced<br \/>\nmore recently, and as the name implies, do not require liquid solutions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The 100W solar panel that is sold in<br \/>\nSinuiju and Pyongsong markets connects to 135A car batteries. A 50W solar panel<br \/>\nneeds to be paired up with a 55A battery, and a 30W with a 28A one in<br \/>\norder to charge power. Depending on the output of electricity, the suitable<br \/>\nbattery type needs to be adequately matched up with the proper panel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The 28A battery at Sinuiju and Pyongsong<br \/>\nmarkets is sold for roughly 30 USD.&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">The 30W solar<br \/>\npanel and 28A battery set makes up for 70 percent of the sales and are used by<br \/>\nthe average person,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;the source explained.<br \/>\n[Exchange rate: 1 USD = 8,200 KPW, as of October 15th at Sinuiju Market]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When it comes to devices that run on solar<br \/>\npower, the source said,&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Depending on the size of<br \/>\nthe display, there are 9-inch, 16-inch &#8216;notetel&#8217; [a type of portable media player from China],<br \/>\nand the 40-inch TV set&nbsp;<\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">Chollyong<\/span>\u2019<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;which is a North Korean rip-off of a Chinese model.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;She explained that the 9-inch models are for the average household,<br \/>\nwhile the 16-inch and&nbsp;<\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">Chollyong<\/span>\u2019 versions<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;are for Party cadres and the <i>donju<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">Traders and some donju, unlike the average<br \/>\nhousehold, use 700W solar panels and large TV screens, and they usually run two<br \/>\nto three panels to power air conditioners and refrigerators as well.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To buy a 30W solar panel, a compatible<br \/>\nbattery, and a flat screen TV, it costs at least 700 RMB [roughly 900,000 KPW].<br \/>\nConsidering that the average daily income of a vendor at the market is roughly<br \/>\n5,000 -20,000 KPW, the cost is substantial.&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">People<br \/>\nsave up money for roughly a year, and purchase the solar panel set as their<br \/>\nmost treasured asset,<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;the source explained.&nbsp;<\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">In the end, people are buying their electricity at the markets as<br \/>\nwell.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Solar panels are providing solutions for North Koreans who constantly struggle with an unreliable source of state electricity, enabling them to generate their own power, the Daily NK has learned.
