As a result, residents are experiencing a dearth in allotments of<br \/>\nelectricity, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?num=12188&amp;cataId=nk01500\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">which are already extremely low<\/font><\/a>, and the train system has been rendered almost inoperable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe drought lasted for a number of months<br \/>\nand so the hydraulic power plant\u2019s water supply decreased rapidly,\u201d a source in North<br \/>\nHamgyung Province reported to Daily NK on October 16th. \u201cMost major cities<br \/>\nincluding Chongjin have experienced a halt in power supply for a number of<br \/>\nweeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cAny electricity available is being<br \/>\nallocated to farms for the threshing process of the harvest, so the cities are blanketed in darkness,\u201d he said, going on to explain that the<br \/>\nlargest dam associated with Seodusu Power Plant was built as another \u201cspeed<br \/>\nbattle&#8221; related to the &#8220;Chosun Speed,&#8221; emphasized during the Kim Jong Eun era.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This concept focuses on completing projects as quickly as possible, with little to no emphasis on safety or quality, and in this case, has led to large-scale water leakages from the plant&#8217;s shoddy construction. Combined with the severe drought, this ideology has brought power output to an extreme low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the source, provincial Party<br \/>\ncadres have reportedly said, \u201cThe plant itself is poorly constructed so there\u2019s<br \/>\nnothing we can do about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Moreover, trains are unable to<br \/>\ntransport&nbsp;fuel on time, so power production at the Chungjin<br \/>\nThermoelectric Power Plant has also plummeted. \u201cThe coal mines in Hyeryung<br \/>\nare unable to transport coal to Chongjin and the equipment in the mines is<br \/>\nfunctioning at 1\/10 of its capacity in the past,&#8221; the source explained. \u201cAbout 1 in 5 machines<br \/>\nis currently operational.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Residents are particularly outraged at the<br \/>\nlack of power, \u201cThey can\u2019t run the water pumps due to the blackouts, so the<br \/>\nsupply of tap water has been biggest issue for us.&#8221; He elaborated by saying, \u201cMost people are using wells, and the number of those falling ill from colitis [an inflammation of the<br \/>\ncolon which may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea&nbsp;with<br \/>\nor without blood] and diarrhea has spiked; even so, trying to get what\u2019s left<br \/>\nin the wells is a daily struggle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The power shortages have also wreaked havoc<br \/>\non the train schedules; routes such as the Pyongyang-Musan line, as well as the<br \/>\nPyongyang- Tumen River line, are experiencing power failures on dozens of<br \/>\nsections of the tracks, forcing the trains to turn around halfway<br \/>\nthrough the trip, never to arrive at their intended destinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In addition to the tap water, the inability<br \/>\nof residents to charge the batteries kept in their homes has posed the most<br \/>\nproblems. A system has emerged where residents bribe workers at power plants to<br \/>\nprovide them with some electricity; in other cases, residents cut into power cables themselves to steal enough to charge the batteries on which they are so reliant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis process allows people to charge the 12V 50-60A batteries we use in our homes and then we can charge our mobile phones,&#8221; the source said, regarding those<\/span>&nbsp;who bribe workers at the plants. &#8220;You have to find large factories like steel mills to do it though, and the fee for charging a battery for an hour costs approximately 5,000 KPW.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He went on to say that if residents go about connecting to the lines on their own, they do so around the<br \/>\nhomes of Party cadres, which generally see far &nbsp;more consistent and higher supplies of electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cNorth Korea is a country without the<br \/>\nletter \u2018Rieul.\u2019 In Korean, the words &#8216;water&#8217;, &#8216;lights,&#8217; and &#8216;rice&#8217; all use this character, and all<br \/>\nare in short supply [in North Korea],&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/span>\u201cThe newspaper reported that electricity<br \/>\nproduction is on the rise, but I don\u2019t know where all that power went.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Korea\u2019s continuous drought and fuel shortages have caused power outages due to suspended production in the nation\u2019s power plants.
