It is one of the companies tasked with earning foreign<br \/>\ncurrency for the North, but recently, with the wages standing at a mere 10th of those earned by individually employed workers, more people are leaving their posts, the Daily<br \/>\nNK has learned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWorkers employed by breweries or bakeries receive roughly<br \/>\n200,000 KPW a month,\u201d a source in South Pyongan Province reported to Daily NK<br \/>\non Tuesday. \u201cBut at Neungna 88, workers on the clothing line only make 20,000<br \/>\nKPW even though they work in unsatisfactory environments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The trade company falls under the Chosun Workers\u2019 Party\u2019s<br \/>\nFinance and Accounting Department and exports to China everything from coal and<br \/>\niron ore to medicine, alcohol, clothing, and health supplements, earning back<br \/>\nforeign currency. The profits are offered up to the Department or are used to<br \/>\nprocure holiday gifts for Party cadres under Kim Jong Eun\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Neungna 88 in Suncheon is a branch of the headquarters in<br \/>\nPyongyang, and focuses on exporting clothes in collaboration with China, meaning the company brings in the yarn, fabric, and designs from China, and then<br \/>\nexports the final products back. It also runs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?cataId=nk01500&amp;num=12250\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">restaurant serving pizza<\/font><\/a>&nbsp;to procure additional funds. Increasing foreign food availability is the<br \/>\nlatest method employed by these foreign-currency organizations to encourage<br \/>\nresident spending, encouraged by the increased demand. For foreign<br \/>\ncurrency-earning enterprises to extend their activities domestically is<br \/>\nindicative of the increasing purchasing power of the middle-class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf you get to Daedong River in Sunchon, you\u2019ll see a big<br \/>\nsign on a three-story building that reads Neungna 88 Trading Company,\u201d the<br \/>\nsource explained. \u201cThe first floor is a pizza place, and on the second and<br \/>\nthird stories, there are some 150 women making clothes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Their monthly wages are 20,000 KPW [2.3 USD], which is<br \/>\nalmost seven times higher than other state-run companies, but the lowest among<br \/>\ntrading companies.There are no standards as to how much these trading companies<br \/>\nhave to pay their employees, and each company decides based on the profits and<br \/>\namount of work allocated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unlike men, it is very rare for women in their teens or 20s<br \/>\nto work for a trading company. Despite this fact, some women work on garment<br \/>\nmanufacturing lines because of the regular food rations and extra benefits<br \/>\noffered on national holidays, regardless of the low wages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">However, recently more people have been quitting their jobs,<br \/>\nas those who are hired by private businesses are able to receive up to a<br \/>\nten-fold increase in wages and work in a more pleasant environment, the source<br \/>\nexplained. This portends a growing number of women who are seeking more<br \/>\nthan a low wage with rations and instead looking for better employment<br \/>\nopportunities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With this trend, the company has been trying to hire more<br \/>\nwomen with experience at state-run apparel factories, but not many are willing<br \/>\nto due to the low salary. \u201cBecause of this, unless Neungna 88 raises its wages it will create obstacles for exports, not only due to technical difficulties, but<br \/>\nalso low morale,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neungna 88 Trading Company, located in Suncheon, South Pyongan Province, has been a popular workplace for women, offering jobs in clothes manufacturing.
