Image: Andrew Cheng<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sunchon, South Pyongan Province, has seen the introduction of a new pizzeria, known to be the first eatery serving &nbsp;Western cuisine in any area of North Korea outside the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/read.php?num=11664&amp;cataId=nk00300\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">Tourist Andrew Cheng<\/font><\/a>, who visited North<br \/>\nKorea during celebrations for the anniversary of Kim Jong Il\u2019s birth on<br \/>\nFebruary 16, recorded in his travel journal that there were two pizza restaurants in<br \/>\nPyongyang, using ingredients purportedly imported from Italy. The ingredients<br \/>\nat this establishment, however, are all imported from China, though it boasts a<br \/>\nprofessional chef hailing from Pyongyang\u2019s Jang Cheol Ku University, named for<br \/>\nthe region where Kim Il Sung ate during the Anti-Japanese Resistance, and<br \/>\nfamous for its cooking and hospitality major.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A source in South Pyongan Province reported<br \/>\nto Daily NK on August 27th, \u201cThe Neungra 88 Trade Company Restaurant began at<br \/>\nthe end of last year, and is very popular among the affluent population,\u201d<br \/>\nadding, \u201cOne pizza pie costs approximately 30,000 KPW [$3.50 USD].\u201d He went on<br \/>\nto explain that the variety topped with ground pork is the most popular, as the<br \/>\nauthorities do not allow the consumption of beef and dole out harsh punishments<br \/>\nto anyone who kills one without permission; oxen are considered a productive<br \/>\nresource and the sole property of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Knowledge of the term \u201cpizza\u201d does not<br \/>\nexist among most, leading some residents in the area refer to the restaurant\u2019s<br \/>\nstaple item as \u201cmixed <i>buchimgae<\/i><br \/>\n[pan-fried vegetable pancake].\u201d North Korean authorities actively resist foreign<br \/>\ninfluences, particularly from the English Language. While South Korea borrows<br \/>\nwords from English, North Korea creates indigenous substitutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Others refer to the varieties of pies<br \/>\navailable as \u201c<i>okonomiyaki<\/i> [a Japanese<br \/>\nsavory pancake] mixed <i>buchimgae<\/i>.\u201d <i>Okonomiyaki<\/i>, the only version of a<br \/>\nforeign fried pancake North Korean residents have been exposed to until now, brought in when tens of thousands of Koreans left Japan for North Korea,<br \/>\nencouraged to repatriate by the pro-North Korean Chongryon [General Association<br \/>\nof Korean Residents in Japan].<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The source interpreted the restaurant\u2019s<br \/>\nestablishment as a sign that \u201cforeign currency-targeted operations have started<br \/>\nto show interest in North Korean money as well.\u201d The restaurant operates under<br \/>\nthe \u201cNeungra 88 Trade Company,\u201d an arm of the Chosun Workers\u2019 Party Finance and<br \/>\nAccounting Department charged with procuring foreign currency. The company<br \/>\nusually sells coal and iron-ore, which fetch the most money in China, but also<br \/>\nmedication, alcohol, or anything else that may yield financial gains on the black market. Profits<br \/>\nare usually funneled directly back to the Finance and Accounting Department, or<br \/>\nused to purchase lavish holiday gifts for Party cadres, who often distribute trading<br \/>\nlicenses, at a hefty fee, to other foreign-currency earning organizations to<br \/>\nprocure more money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Increasing foreign food availability is the<br \/>\nlatest method employed by these foreign-currency organizations to encourage<br \/>\nresident spending, encouraged by the increased demand. The popularity of<br \/>\nChinese-style lamb kebabs spread more rapidly in the North than its Southern<br \/>\ncounterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mooncakes, a traditional Chinese dessert,<br \/>\nhave even made their way to family memorial service tables set up during<br \/>\nChuseok [the traditional Korean harvest festival]. These foreign-currency<br \/>\nearning operations are in fierce competition to bring in culinary traditions<br \/>\nfrom China, justified as measures to improve the quality of life for North<br \/>\nKorean residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The restaurant sits inside the Yeonpo<br \/>\nDistrict of Sunchon City, an emerging business area. An expressway stretching<br \/>\nto the edge of the Taedong River has been constructed to transport Anthracite<br \/>\n[smokeless coal] produced in the coal mines into the city. Cargo handling for the<br \/>\nsmokeless coal has shifted from the West Sea port of Nampo, to the inner city<br \/>\narea near the Taedong River, galvanizing business activity in the Yeonpo<br \/>\nDistrict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Over 100 Chinese-manufactured trucks loaded<br \/>\nwith anthracite coal pass through the area daily, giving rise to an expanding<br \/>\ntransient population working in the commercial hub, which the source said<br \/>\ncontinues to fill up with buildings constructed by agencies of various levels<br \/>\neager to do business there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Operating from the first floor<br \/>\nof a three-story building owned by the Neungra 88 Trade Company in the<br \/>\nChiisagata District of the city, the pizzeria incorporates elements of Western<br \/>\ninterior design and features an expansive terrace complete with patio chairs to take in<br \/>\nsweeping views of the Taedong River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn front of the restaurant there is an<br \/>\nexpansive parking lot for its main patrons, the <i>donju<\/i> [new affluent middle class], to park their vehicles,\u201d he<br \/>\nadded,\u201d You can seem them every weekend, sporting sunglasses and coming to<br \/>\nenjoy the mixed&nbsp;<i>buchimgae<\/i>.\u201d He added<br \/>\nthat the restaurant offers take out service but that home delivery is not yet<br \/>\navailable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For foreign currency-earning enterprises to<br \/>\nextend their activities domestically is indicative of the increasing<br \/>\npurchasing power of the middle-class. \u201cThose without will continue to be<br \/>\nwithout, but those with money can use the power and capital they possess to get<br \/>\nricher and richer,&#8221; he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Pyongyang pizzeria visited by tourist Andrew Cheng.
