{"id":25584,"date":"2013-12-27T20:38:08","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T11:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.dailynk.com\/en\/?p=25584"},"modified":"2020-01-17T09:27:31","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T00:27:31","slug":"gold-mining-stopped-to-unify-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/gold-mining-stopped-to-unify-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Mining Stopped to Unify Funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">Approximately two&nbsp;months prior to the purge of Jang Sung Taek, the North Korean authorities halted<br \/>\nexports of gold ore from the mines of Hwanghae Province in the southwest of the<br \/>\ncountry, Daily NK has learned. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">The step&nbsp;allegedly&nbsp;followed the discovery of improprieties in the<br \/>\noperation of mining enterprises managed by persons linked with Jang, and formed part<br \/>\nof measures designed&nbsp;to bring foreign currency-earning activities en masse under strict<br \/>\nCentral Party control.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">\u201cThe order to halt exports was handed down in October, some<br \/>\nmonths before the official news of the purge of Jang Sung Taek,\u201d a source<br \/>\ninvolved in the industry told Daily NK on the 27<sup><font size=\"2\">th<\/font><\/sup>. \u201cIt was even<br \/>\napplied to foreign currency-earners affiliated with Central Party organs,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;those from normal provincial-level agencies.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">\u201cA directive ordering operations to cease from the second<br \/>\nhalf of the year was issued to Holdong and Eunpa mines in Yeonsan County, North<br \/>\nHwanghae Province. These mines are shut now and their shafts are just filling up<br \/>\nwith water,\u201d the source went on. \u201cMine officials have told me that this order&nbsp;came down stating that neither provincial nor Central Party<br \/>\nmanaged-enterprises were allowed to mine for gold.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font color=\"#000000\">\u201cBy doing this just a few months before the Jang<br \/>\nSong Taek purge, the authorities moved to integrate foreign currency-earning<br \/>\nactivities and confiscate those enterprises and funds formerly managed by Jang<br \/>\nprior to his purging,\u201d he added. Explicating his view of the logic behind the<br \/>\nstep, he went on, \u201c[The authorities] wish to greatly reinforce their control<br \/>\nover these foreign-currency earning enterprises\u2019 resources&nbsp;so as to&nbsp;bring<br \/>\ntogether the management of Kim Jong Eun\u2019s ruling funds.\u201d <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">\u201cI am told that they discovered that the enterprises Jang was<br \/>\nmanaging&nbsp;had not been&nbsp;passing their profits to the state in the prescribed manner,<br \/>\nso they halted the trade completely\u201d the source alleged. \u201cThey controlled the<br \/>\nmines, saying that the reason was because Jang was flogging off natural<br \/>\nresources for a low price.\u201d <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">\u201cPreviously, only ore with a purity of 20-30g of gold per ton<br \/>\ncould be exported, so any ore with a lower purity than this was not controlled.<br \/>\nBut now they are stopping all gold ore from exiting,\u201d he went on to explain,<br \/>\nadding that the ban&nbsp;is causing serious problems for the region\u2019s miners, many of<br \/>\nwhom rely in large part on income from the mines for their survival.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Calibri\">\u201cThey used to share export licenses with other enterprises<br \/>\nand export ore that way, too, but right now that is also totally prohibited,\u201d<br \/>\nhe added.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Approximately two&nbsp;months prior to the purge of Jang Sung Taek, the North Korean authorities halted exports of gold ore from the mines of Hwanghae Province in the southwest of the country, Daily NK has learned.
