The Inspiration of a Student Activist

[imText1]Somewhere on Cheongye Street in Seoul, where snow has frozen into patchy ice after the cold wave that hit a few days ago, a young man is demonstrating with placards by his side. On the placards it says, “End the political prison camps now!” “Human rights for North Koreans!” and “Let’s open the border wide!”

With thoughts of Robert Park, the American activist who entered North Korea on Christmas Day, Park Chong Myung wants to tell the world about North Korea’s serious human rights problems. Despite the cold weather, he started his one-man demonstration two weeks ago, trying to tell the world of the situation inside North Korea.

Park says he became interested in the matter when he participated in a unification camp sponsored by the Education Center for Unification. He feels great regret at the current situation, explaining to The Daily NK that, “North Korea’s human rights problem is extremely serious and in desperate need of improvement…South Koreans tend to limit North Korea’s problems only to politics”

“Small things like uploading news articles about North Korea to blogs and web pages or changing chat room nicknames to North Korea-related ones can help, too,” he says, “Everything will be fine if individuals try their best for North Korea.”

Park currently runs a blog called “Save NK.” He plans to continue with his one-man demonstration every Wednesday and Friday, so if you’re in Seoul, why not take time out to encourage him?

Here’s what Park Chong Myung had to say to The Daily NK.
