Rainless Spring Arrives in Hwanghae

On April 17th, Chosun Central Broadcast reported
that dry weather in Pyongyang and areas of North and South Hwanghae is likely
to persist until the end of April.

Conditions were reported in a special program earlier today,
with the state broadcaster explaining, “The spring has arrived, and in western
coastal areas almost no rain is falling and serious drought conditions have
arisen.”

According to the piece, 3.1mm of rain has fallen in South
Hwanghae Province in the two months since mid February, the lowest amount since
records began. Most notably, there has been less than 1mm of rain in the same
period in Sangwon, Eunpa, Suan and Sariwon in North Hwanghae Province, and
Gwail, Anak, Euncheon and Haeju in South Hwanghae Province.

In Pyongyang, meanwhile, the conditions are analogous with
another dry year, 1982, the report explained. No rain has fallen in the North
Korean capital since 6mm on March 29th.

A similar broadcast was picked up in Seoul on March 24th.
