Suseo police station hosts concert for locals and North Korean defectors

A concert was hosted on May 16 by the Suseo police station for local residents and North Korean defectors in Maru Park in Ilwon’s Gangnam district to celebrate diversity within the community. The event was attended by approximately 1,000 local residents and North Korean defectors.
The concert featured performances by the police band, followed by song and dance routines performed by the Suseo police public relations team. Refreshments were available along with various other services including oriental medical treatment, legal advice, and even haircuts.
Positive feedback was received from the attendees particularly in regards to the North Korean food-sharing event prepared by local North Korean defectors.
A defector living in Suseo said, “It was a time for physical and mental healing as we had an outstanding time together with the local residents. I hope we can continue to share our joy and grief together.”
Yoo Meong Oh, chief of the security division of Suseo police station added, “We hope that local North Korean defectors can talk to police officers openly about their difficulties adapting to and navigating South Korean society. We will do our best to help them settle in.”
