Play based on defectors’ testimonies to debut in Seoul

A group of drama students from Korea
National University of Arts have joined together to put on a play based entirely on the true
stories and testimonies of North Korean defectors.
 

The performance, titled “Letters from
North Korea,” will be held at Daehak-ro Yeolim-Hall from July 27th (3 and
7p.m.) and 28th (3p.m.) and all proceeds will be used to help North Korean
refugees safely escape to South Korea.
 

As the title suggests, the plot focuses on letters, written
by four North Korean refugees composing letters while imprisoned in China, read
by members of North Korean human rights groups in South Korea. As the human
rights worker reads the letter on one side of the stage, the letter’s composer concurrently flashes back to the most memorably moment in his or her life in the adjacent space.

“Freedoms that mean nothing to us may mean
miracles for others. We wanted to talk about those miracles through the lives
of North Koreans,” Na Ha-Na, the play’s producer, said when asked about the inspiration behind the performance.
 

Jung Eun-Song, who plays the role of one of
the North Korean defectors, asserted that the play will be “different,” and
that they “wouldn’t be happier than if they could get people get to realize how
grateful are things that we take for granted every day, how great miracles they
are, through the play.”   
 

She added, “Our broader goal is to
bring a North Korean defector safely to South Korea with proceeds made from
ticket sales. We sincerely hope that he or she gets to enjoy the
unified Korean Peninsula.  miracles that
we have.”
