Ebola Detection Devices Installed at Kaesong

The installation of Ebola detection devices
at Kaesong Industrial Complex per North Korea’s request is underway, according to a statement by the South’s Ministry of Unification today.

An official with the Ministry told
reporters that personnel from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and
related departments were scheduled to install three thermal scanners within the
North
s immigration office at Kaesong, followed by an information session on the equipment’s operating procedures. The personnel are expected to return to Seoul on the same day.

Citing efforts to thwart an outbreak of the Ebola virus in its territory, North Korea requested the quarantine equipment from the South
on the 29th of last month.

Tympanic thermometers [ear thermometers]
have been used to inspect South Korean personnel coming and going through the
immigration office on the North Korean side of Kaesong,
an official with the Ministry stated.  After the installation [of the new equipment] we expect this process
to be much faster.

Each device is priced at 15 million KRW [US$13,000]; operation of the machinery,
being leased for free to North Korea as exporting such equipment violates U.N. resolutions, will be carried out by North Korean
workers under the direct supervision of South Korean personnel.
