MoU and WFP Enter Memorandum of Understanding on NK

South Korea’s Ministry of Unification plants to enter a Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] with the World Food Programme [WFP]
for humanitarian assistance and cooperation on North Korea.

“The Ministry of Unification and the WFP are expected to enter a MOU in Rome today to strengthen mutual cooperation in providing
nutritional aid to North Korean women and children,” an official from the
Ministry stated on November 18th.

“The main content of the MOU calls for
increased bilateral cooperation and sharing results of humanitarian assistance
to North Korea,” noting the strong need for a systematic approach by
organizations on both sides regarding North Korean nutrition projects.

In September, South Korea confirmed plans
to contribute 7,000,000 USD to the WFP’s project on infant and maternal
nutrition in North Korea.

Meanwhile, the government announced its intentions to continue
to provide nutrition assistance to vulnerable social groups in North Korea. In August, South Korea provided 6,040,000 USD to the United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF] and 6,300,000
USD in October to the World Health Organization [WHO] for projects assisting North Korean children.
