Former First Lady Likely to Visit North Korea

For the first time since taking office,
South Korea’s President Park Geun Hye met with the Kim Dae Jung’s widow,
former first lady Lee Hee Ho, on October 28th. The late Kim Dae Jung, president of South Korea from 1998-2003, was known for his engagement policy with Pyongyang.

At the 2:30p.m. meeting, Park stated, “I
have not forgotten your request that you made two years ago to bring about a
speedy unification of the two Koreas,” referencing Lee’s remarks at the inauguration of the
Unification Preparatory Committee.

“The former first lady has informed me that she
has knit hats and scarves for her visit,” Park stated. “She feels that love and
care are most important things for the children in North Korea.”

“The children in North Korea are facing
adverse circumstances and I  made these warm clothes so that they may be
used to help them ward off the cold,” Lee said. “I would be grateful if you
could allow me to go to North Korea.”

President Park indicated that she would approve the visit by stating, “When it is the most convenient for you, I will look into
that opportunity.”

She went on to express regret that she was unable to see the former first lady Lee during the fifth anniversary of Kim Dae Jung’s death and commented that she was aware that Lee unfailingly visits her late husband’s tomb twice a week, to which Lee responded, “Thank you very much for the floral wreath you sent for the fifth anniversary of his death.”

President Park expressed equal thanks for
the condolence flowers sent by Lee to honor the 35th anniversary of the death
of her father, Park Jung Hee, on October 26th. She concluded by stating, “Former
President Kim Dae Jung would be so happy to see you healthy and engaging in so
many activities.”
