Cultural Differences between the Koreas Must Be Addressed

As plans by the recently formed Unification Preparatory
Committee gain momentum, some have voiced the need for “culture art” to bring
the two Koreas together and narrow the gap in their cultural differences.

Lee Dae Young, a professor at Chung-Ang University, spoke as
part of a lecture series hosted by the AGIT SC Media Center in the Mapo
District of Seoul, titled, “Unification Instruction Manual” on September 16th.

During his presentation, Lee stated, “At the current stage
of unification discussion we can contribute solutions as to how to solve issues
in the area of arts and culture.” He went on to note that as the cultures of
North and South are inherently different, society must strive to find new ways
to approach the issue in order to avoid impeding the unification process.

He brought up that many aspects of North Korean culture are
completely foreign to South Koreans, and are a result of the oppressive system
under which they are subjected. Lee emphasized the importance of proper
awareness and understanding on the part of South Koreans, for without it, he
said, “there is no possibility for unification to progress as it should.”

Lee concluded by stressing the need for South Koreans to
build a “transitional space,” during the unification process–one that
incorporates both Koreas. “‘Culture art’ does not exist currently, but there is
good reason to discuss it, and by working towards this transitional space in
the present we can prevent suffering and issues in the future,” he said.
